Michael Pellach (31 October 1921–28 October 2002) was an American aerospace engineer with Grumman. Notably, he was head of design for the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

Career[edit]

Grumman[edit]

He joined Grumman in 1950 and retired in 1986.[citation needed]

F-14 Tomcat[edit]

In 1959 John Stack (engineer), of NASA, had proved the possibility of variable geometry aircraft, with a fixed pivot. The F-111 contract was given to a team including Grumman. There would be a naval version, the F-111B, which would be developed by Grumman alone, but this naval version would be cancelled in 1968, as the aircraft was too heavy for carrier operations, and forward visibility was limited, and unsuitable. The US Navy wanted a new fighter, the VFX.[citation needed]

Grumman was given the contract on 14 January 1969.[1]

The aircraft first flew on 21 December 1970.[citation needed]
