Java Edition[1] [2][edit]

Pre Release:[edit]

Survival Test[edit]

The original edition of Minecraft, now known as the Java Edition was first developed in May 2009.[3] This version included basic features still used now including the health bar, the inventory and the bases for the future textures. The biggest part of this update was the addition of the Creepers.

Indev (0.31)[edit]

Major addition of the crafting table and the mechanics and diamonds.

Infdev[edit]

Additions include armour and the farming mechanic. But the biggest part being infinite world generation.

Alpha (1.0 - 1.2)[edit]

Arguably one of the most pivotal updates because of the addition of Redstone, compasses and the Nether a hell like place with lakes of the new liquid Lava.

Beta (1.0 - 1.7)[edit]

Basic additions include eggs, leaf decay, note blocks and repeaters (A Redstone component). Bigger additions that affected the game more are beds, achievements and pistons.

Adventure Update 1 (Beta 1.8)[edit]

This update added endermen, an addition needed for the next update, and hunger.

After Release:[edit]

Adventure Update 2 (1.0 - 1.3)[edit]

1.0[edit]

This could be the update that changed the direction of Minecraft for the better. Not only was it the first public release of the game but it added a new dimension 'The End' which adds the new boss mob The Ender Dragon. This new dimension adds an end goal to the game after killing the dragon.

1.1 - 1.3[edit]

1.1 added spawn eggs, superflat worlds and new beach generation. 1.2's main features were the new jungle biome, iron golems and abandoned mineshafts. 1.3 added desert and jungle temples, emeralds and ender chests. It also added the infamous Enchanted Golden Apple, known by the community as Notch Apples because Notch himself said that if you killed him in-game he would drop an apple.[4]

Pretty Scary Update (1.4)[edit]

The pretty scary update adds a new boss mob The Wither, command blocks and beacons (crafted with the nether star dropped by the wither after killing it).

The Redstone Update (1.5)[edit]

This update adds lots of new Redstone features including hoppers, block of Redstone, Redstone comparator and quartz (a new ore that generates in the nether to craft some Redstone items and blocks) .

Horse Update (1.6)[edit]

This update focuses on the new mob the horse. It adds the horse and leads/leashes whilst also adding coal blocks and carpets.

The Update that Changed the World (1.7)[edit]

This is a major update for the world generation of Minecraft because it adds 11 new biomes. Some of which include Mesas (The Badlands), Ice Spikes and the Mega Taiga but it also brings customizable nether portals.

Bountiful Update (1.8)[edit]

The main features of the update are ocean monuments and the mobs that comes with it, rabbits, diorite, andesite and granite but it also brings armour stands and banners.

Combat Update (1.9)[edit]

This update is by far the most controversial update because of the additions. People speculate weather this update was because of the game being bought by Microsoft over a year before the updates release.[5] This update major additions include:

  • End Cities
  • Elytra
  • Major Combat Changes
  • Shields

But it also brought subtitles, igloos, tipped and spectral arrows, change to the ender dragon fight, left hand, removed enchanted golden apples and better command blocks.

Frostburn Update (1.10)[edit]

Main features include polar bears, magma blocks, strays and husks but it also brings nether wart and bone blocks.

Exploration Update (1.11)[edit]

This update adds woodland mansions (a new structure), shulker boxes, llamas and the totem of undying.

World of Colour Update (1.12)[edit]

The main features of the update are Coloured Concrete and Concrete Power, Glazed Terracotta and parrots. But it also brings coloured beds and improved wool colours.

Update Aquatic (1.13)[edit]

This update is the update that changed Minecraft's oceans for the better adding new biomes and generation, some of the main features include:

  • Kelp and Seagrass
  • Fish mobs
  • Dolphins and Turtles
  • The drowned (A zombie that has been submerged underwater and transformed)
  • Tridents
  • Coral Reefs
  • Conduits

This update also brings:

  • Underwater Caves
  • Swimming
  • Shipwrecks
  • Treasure maps and treasure chests
  • Icebergs
  • Bubble columns
  • New water functions

This update brings the first of the many Minecraft Votes, the community voted for the phantom though. The phantom is a flying mob that attacks you at night if you don't sleep for 3 days straight.

Village and Pillage (1.14)[edit]

This update brings the village overhaul, raids, pillagers and ravagers, texture updates (Notably netherack), foxes, pandas and bamboo forests. But the update also brings new workstations.

Buzzy Bees (1.15)[edit]

This updates main features were bees and all of its additions (Notably honey blocks). However Mojang stated this update was mostly made to fix major bugs in the game and re-writing the rendering code.

Nether Update (1.16)[edit]

This update adds the new tool tier Netherite, the first new tool tier in 10 years, and glow squids. This update focuses on the nether, it adds:

  • 4 New nether biomes
  • Piglins and Hoglins
  • Re-naming zombified pigmen to zombified piglins
  • Striders
  • New nether blocks
  • Netherite and its tools and armour

However this update does not include a Minecraft Vote.

Caves and Cliffs Part 1 (1.17)[edit]

This update completely revamps cave generation. The main features are axolotls, new cave plants, goats, powdered snow, copper, amethyst geodes, raw ore, candles and more stone blocks.
