Miss Volunteer America, a nonprofit organization based in Jackson, Tennessee, is a nationwide, service-oriented scholarship program seeking to empower young women through education and opportunity. Contestants must be between the ages of 17-26, never married or have born children, and have a drive for pursuing their education. One of the top scholarship providers for women in the country, Miss Volunteer America will have its inaugural competition on May 7th, 2022 in Jackson, Tennessee, U.S.[2]
There is also a teen division open to contestants ages 13-18, Miss Teen Volunteer America. The national pageant was held on April 30th, 2022 in Jackson.
History[edit]
On June 5th, 2018, the Miss America Scholarship Pageant announced that it would be parting ways with the swimsuit portion of the competition. Gretchen Carlson, Miss America CEO at the time, stated, "We are no longer a pageant; we are a competition...We will no longer judge our candidates on their outward physical appearance. That's huge."[3] Many long-time Miss America volunteers were unhappy with the change, and decided to cut their ties with the organization.[4] In Jackson, Tennessee, Miss Tennessee director Allison Alderson DeMarcus, along with Miss Tennessee 2018 Christine Williamson, departed from the Miss America Program to create a new scholarship pageant, Miss Tennessee Volunteer.[5] The inaugural competition was held on June 16th, 2019 with Williamson crowning Kerri Arnold.[6]
Following the competition, the decision was made to make a national pageant, Miss Volunteer America, statewide pageants were originally scheduled in the second half of 2020 but had postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the national pageant had also postponed in 2022. The inaugural Miss Volunteer America pageant was held on May 7, 2022 in Jackson, Tennessee, United States.
Results[edit]
Placements[edit]
The Miss Volunteer America contestants compete in five phases of competition; a twelve-minute private interview, on-stage question, lifestyle and fitness, talent, and evening gown. Because the inaugural pageant in 2022 was the first, some states decided to appoint representatives rather than have a statewide pageant.
