Shah Sufi Molana Mohammad Ali Raipuri (1895 - 16 October 1981) was a Bengali Islamic scholar and a khalifa of Abdul Ghaffar Barisali.

Early life and education

Mohammad Ali was born on 18 May 1895 (1316H) to a Bengali Muslim family in the village of Raipur in Karimganj, Sylhet district. He was the son of Musharraf Ali and Naseerah Bibi, both of whom were simple and religious people. He began his primary education under Molana Hashim Ali (R). In 1906, he went to Khashir (Hatitillah) in Beanibazar. Hazrat Konai Miah used his home in Kashir as a madrasah back then. Mohammad Ali Raipuri Saheb studied there for a few months. He enrolled at the Katigorah Madrasah in Cachar in 1913, where he studied for one year. In 1914, he became a student at the Ajiria Madrasa in Fulbari, Golapganj. After that, Shah Mohammad Ali Raipuri Saheb travelled to India, becoming a student at the famous Mazahir Uloom Madrasah in Saharanpur. He graduated from Dawra-e-Hadis in 1926.

Sufism

During his time in Saharanpur, he heard of the arrival of Mawlana Abdul Ghaffar Barishali to India. He informed his classmates to go to Muzaffarnagar with him to meet the Mawlana. His classmates complained of financial issues regarding rent. Mohammed Ali Raipuri said that he would take care of all the costs to travel. Upon reaching Muzaffarnagar, they listened to the waz-bayaan of Molana Borishali Shaheb and afterwards Mohammed Ali Raipuri expressed his interest in giving bayaat. Everyone interested was made to sit in muraaqabah and when Barishali saheb looked at Raipuri saheb, Raipuri saheb fell unconscious. Barisali (R) took off his panjabi and went elsewhere. It was winter. After a long time, when his consciousness returned, two men were walking with him by the shoulders. At last he regained full consciousness. He noticed that his whole body was sweaty. He could not say where he was. Tears were flowing in both eyes. It seemed that Barisali (R)'s glance had completely crushed his Deho-Pinjir. After a while, he took leave of the two attendants, put on his clothes, and went back to do khidmat for Barisali saheb. With the barkat of Barisali's glance on the first day, Mohammed Ali Raipuri was able to reach until Walayater Sughra in his sabaq. During a grand mahfil on that day, Barisal (S) said that the newly-joined Molana Mohammed Ali would become the top mureed. And this later came to be true 20 years later.

In 1352 BS (1945), Barisali (S) was doing his final tour. He entered Choukirmukh in Karimganj where there was a mahfil with many of his khulafaa and mureedaan. After giving naseehat and taleem tarbiyat, he asked everyone whether what was said at the Muzaffarnagar Majlis twenty years ago came to be true or not. Everyone became silent. One Molana Saheb then spoke up and said maybe. Barisal (S) asked again in an angry voice, "Has my word not turned out to be true?" Then they all said together, "Hazrat, your words have become true." From the hard work and mihnat from the service of his Murshid, Molana Mohammad Ali Raipuri Sahib was granted the kamaal nisbat of the Naqshbandi-Mujaddidi, Qadri, Chishti and Shadhili tariqas from his Murshid.

Career

Raipuri mainly worked in dawati kaam in areas that were east of the Kushiara river. But later, his kamaal buzurgi and shunaam spread across Bengal and Assam. Thousands of people gave bay'at to Raipuri sahib. Thus, his dawati kaam became more widespread and he would travel all over Bengal and Assam. One time, Raipuri was in a kashfi haal and he saw Hazrat Shah Jalal approach him and say: Apni Amar Sylhet-e Ashun. Ekhane Islamer Hoqiqot Dube Jacche. Apni Marfoter Neyamot E Oncholer Manusher Majhe Bitoron Korun. After that, Raipuri started to frequently go to Sylhet more, especially remote parts of Sylhet as well. In 1947, Raipuri Sahib migrated to East Pakistan (now Bangladesh) permanently.

Personal life

Molana Mohammad Ali Raipuri Sahib married Salimah Khatun, the daughter of his teacher Molana Hashim Ali. Secondly, he married his cousin Moiobi Bibi. His children were: Maryam Begum, Fariduddin Raipuri, Asiyah Khatun, Molana Abdul Jabbar Raipuri, Ruhul Amin Raipuri, Masud Ahmad Raipuri, Hafiz Molana Shabbir Ahmad Raipuri, Hafiz Rashid Ahmad Raipuri, Aishah Khatun and Abdun Noor Raipuri. Thirdly, he married a woman from the village of Dawadari in Kanaighat with whom his final daughter Sufia was born.
