Allama Sahibzada Muhammad Masood Ahmad Fareedi Basirpuri (Urdu:علا مہ صاحبزادہ محمد مسعود احمد فریدی بصیرپوری ),(born 1958) is a religious reformist and Islamic scholar of Sufism in Chishti Order, an order that believes in drawing close to God through love, peace and service to humanity. He is the founding chairman of Jamia Siddiqia and Bazm e Siddiqia Pakistan. He belongs to the well-known Pakistani Arain family.

Early life[edit]

Basirpuri was born in 1958 in the Basirpur district Okara, Pakistan. His father, Khawaja Muhammad Siddique Chishti, was a scholar and spiritual leader. He completed his early education in his hometown and traveled to Lahore for higher study in Fiqh and Hadith from Nizamia University. After that he went to Pakpattan, a historical city, to observe Sufism and spiritual saints. He was influenced by the teachings of Sufi saint Fariduddin Ganjshakar.

Career[edit]

He has more than 30 years experience of teaching Quran, Tafseer, Tajweed, Hadith and Fiqh. He leads Jamia Siddiqia, a religious institute. He strongly believes in girls' education and founded a separate institute for girls in 2000. His institutions are affiliated with Tanzeem Ul Madaras Pakistan.[1]

Social services[edit]

He founded social welfare organization Bazm e Siddiqia that practices collective welfare in Lahore and Basirpur. Hundreds of poor students are being taught with the organization's help.

Modern welfare state[edit]

Fareedi is an exponent of concept of modern welfare state where every ones basic rights are guarded by the state. On different occasions he described his views regarding fundamental rights and mutual respect.[2]

Demonstration against terrorism[edit]

He is known for his outspoken views against terrorism and militancy. In a demonstration against terrorism he said publicly that extremism must be tackled with iron hands.[3] He offered condolences to the parents of 2014 Peshawar school massacre and organized a prayer ceremony for them.

Demonstration against Charlie Hebdo[edit]

With regard to Charlie Hebdo's blasphemous cartoons, he said that freedom of speech must be subject to some exceptions. There must be a red line for such freedom keeping the respect of every religion prime. He also demanded that French government take action against this culpable criminal commission.
