Mona Mofid
Mona Zohdi Mofid is a San Diego-based dermatologist, author, and medical researcher who is best known for serving as the Medical Director of the American Melanoma Foundation.[1] She has also served as Clinical Director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology and was the youngest president of the Maryland Dermatological Society.[1]
She has received accolades such as Castle Connolly’s America’s Top Doctor award in the Dermatology category for seven consecutive years (2015-2022) and seven San Diego’s Top Doctors awards. She is also the co-author of the children’s book Franny and Freddy Get Fried.[1]
She is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology and a diplomate of the American Board of Dermatology. She is currently in private practice with the Sharp Community Medical Group.[1]

Early life and education[edit]
In 1993, Mofid graduated from Louisiana State University with a B.S. in biochemistry and a B.A. in French with a minor in Italian. She earned her M.D. from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in 1997.[2] After graduating with her M.D., she completed an internship in internal medicine (1997-1998) and a residency in dermatology (1998-2001) at Johns Hopkins Hospital.[2][3]
Medical career[edit]
Mofid practiced medicine as part of the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group from 2001-2002. In 2002, she served as the executive director of the 79th Atlantic Dermatological Conference. In the same year, she became the youngest president of the Maryland Dermatological Society. She served in this capacity from 2002-2004.
After her time with the Mid-Atlantic Permanente Medical Group, Mofid served as a clinical director of the Johns Hopkins Department of Dermatology, and as a co-director of Johns Hopkins University’s Melanoma and Pigmented Lesion Clinic. In 2003 and 2004, Mofid also served as the program director for the Johns Hopkins Inaugural Postgraduate Seminars in Dermatology. From 2003-2007, Mofid was a member of the American Academy of Dermatology State Society Development Task Force.
From 2010-2013, Mofid served on the Executive Board for the Combined Health Agencies.
Mofid has written as a contributor for the Times of San Diego.[4] She has also been interviewed for publications such as NBC News,[5] Beauty in the Bag,[6] The East County Californian,[7] and The Alpine Sun.[8]
She currently operates her private practice in San Diego and Coronado, California.[1] She is also serving as a member of the Sharp Community Medical Group’s Metro Regional Board of Directors and Co-Chair of the Sharp Community Medical Group’s Happiness Committee. She is also a committee member of the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention.
Philanthropy[edit]
Mofid joined the Board of Directors for the American Melanoma Foundation in 2003. She was named the organization’s medical director in 2005, and has continued to serve in this role for over 15 years.[1]
Mofid has also provided pro bono medical services for migrant farm workers as part of the Farmworker Justice project.[9]
In 2023, Mofid received her 100th Guardian Angel Award from Sharp Healthcare for 100 donations in her name to the hospital system.[10] In the same year, Mofid also funded an orphanage in Nigeria alongside Jim Reopelle, which was named the Dr. Mona and Jim Reopelle House of Kindness in their honor. In addition to this, she recently funded a therapy dog named Walker for the San Diego Police Department.
