The company provides consultancy and engineering services to a broad range of clients globally to various industries including electricity, oil and gas & petrochemical, ICT, telecommunication, dispatching, mining and metallurgy, water & wastewater and transportation. Monenco was founded in 1973 as a joint venture between the private sectors of Iran and Canada focusing on the Iran electricity industry and soon was well positioned in the domestic market. Monenco grew quickly and successfully diversified its services into a broader range of business areas not only in the homeland market but also in the international market.

Acquisitions and Shareholders[edit]

Montreal Engineering Company Ltd. a Canadian engineering services company, was founded in 1907 by three staff members of a department of the Royal Securities Corporation used to operate in the energy and infrastructure utilities area. After 1964 the company diversified from its core electrical power business and in 1969 it became a public company and renamed to Monenco Inc.[5]

In 1992 Monenco Inc. was acquired by AGRA Inc. an international Canadian-based professional services group specializing in engineering, construction, environmental and technology solutions. Consequently, Monenco Inc. was renamed to AGRA Monenco.[6]

In 1973, a private sector of Iran and Agra Monenco formed Monenco Iran rendering consultancy and engineering services focusing on the Iran electricity industry.[7]

In 1980 Monenco Iran established Ghods Niroo and terminated its cooperation with Monenco Agra.[7]

In 1991 Monenco Iran started over its activities by partnership of the Government of Iran and Monenco Agra.[7]

In 1997 the government's share of Monenco Iran was acquired by MAPNA, whilst AGRA Monenco’s share was passed to AMEC in 2000 then Amec Foster wheeler in 2014 and at last Wood Group in 2017.[8] [9] [10] [11]

MAPNA Group is a group of Iranian companies involved in development and execution of thermal and renewable power plants, oil & gas, railway transportation and other industrial projects as well as manufacturing main equipment including gas and steam turbines, electrical generator, turbine blade and vane, HRSG and conventional boilers, electric and control systems, gas compressor, locomotive and other pertinent equipment.[8]

In 2004, MIR Management Consultancy Company (Monenco employees’ share) was formed as one of the main shareholders of Monenco Iran rendering consultancy services through the following business areas; Management Consultancy, Information and Communication Technology (ICT), General and Professional Training Services.[12]

For the time being, the main shareholders of Monenco Iran are Mapna Group, Wood Group and MIR Management Consultancy Company.[13]

In 2010, Monenco Consulting Engineers (MCE) [14] in Oman was established as a hub in the Middle East to better manage and supervise the projects awarded in the region. [7]

In 2011, Monenco Engineering Limited (MEL) was registered in Nigeria and in 2016 Monenco Germany in Germany which led Monenco to grow its market penetration in the CIS, Africa and European markets. [7]

In 2012, Monenco was successful to enter into Bangladesh oil & gas market and was successful to expand its business lines into electricity industry. [7]

In 2019, Monenco registered two branches in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan predominantly with regard to CASA 1000 project. This mega project is about a new electricity transmission system connecting Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan to Afghanistan and Pakistan. This system will help make the most efficient use of clean hydropower resources in the Central Asian countries by enabling them to transfer and sell their electricity surplus during the summer months to the deficient countries in South Asia.[15]

Locally, Monenco operates through its regional offices in 6 major cities including Kermanshah, Isfahan, Shiraz, Ahvaz, Bushehr and Urmia and technical offices all over the country.[16] Internationally, Monenco has established 3 registered companies in Germany, Oman and Nigeria, 2 subsidiaries in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and 2 representatives in Canada and Bangladesh. [16]

In 2012, Monenco was ranked as one of the top 200 consulting firms in the world by ENR and in 2018 ranked among the 400 giant companies in Iran by IMI-100.[17] In 2017, Monenco was awarded for being the “Exemplary Exporter” of the country among the top ranking exporting companies in Iran from Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade. Also, the prize for the best Consulting Engineer in ICT sector in the field of exporting Knowledge based services was awarded to Monenco by Iran ministry of Telecommunication and information.[18] [19]

In 2019, Monenco Iran was awarded for being the “Exemplary Exporter” of Tehran Province from Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.[20]

Also, same year, Monenco Iran has been successfully registered as a Knowledge based company (type 2) by Vice President of Science and Technology.[21]

In 2020, Monenco Iran has become an Affiliate Member of International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) as the only Iranian affiliated company based on its valuable experiences domestically and internationally appointed by the FIDIC Board.[22]

Monenco Iran has been successfully active in pursuing (CSR) opportunities based on Monenco Iran corporate social responsibility strategies.[16] Some of the major activities are as described below;

  • Since 2007, Monenco Iran has provided over 300 technical reports which in 2018 developed an application called “Monenco Insight” that includes all the technical reports.
  • Since 2017, Monenco Iran as the secretariat of Cigre Iran, is responsible to promote Cigre in Iran.
  • Since 2017, Monenco Iran has been allocating scholarships to university students
