Mount Athos (2022), or People of Mount Athos[1] is a 2022 documentary film by Andrei Oprescu about the monastic life on Mount Athos.[2] The film, which is entirely shot on Mount Athos, tells "the story of a community of Orthodox Christian monks who live by Byzantine rules that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries".[3] The documentary follows the journey of a young novice, Manolis, who becomes an Orthodox monk, Father Paisios.[4] The filmmaker, Andrei Oprescu, has spent an extensive time on Mount Athos, gaining the trust of the monks and being able to film intimate moments of their daily lives,[5] as well as places not shown on camera before.[6]

Stills from the film were shown in a photography exhibition at the Romanian Peasant Museum in April and May 2021.[7]

The film is mainly shot in small cells and hermitages across Mount Athos, although it also features scenes shot at the main monasteries, such as Simonopetra Monastery, Dionysiou Monastery, Pantokratoros Monastery and Stavronikita Monastery.

Andrei Oprescu had an extensive knowledge of the subject matter, firstly visiting the Monastic Republic of Mount Athos in 2011,[8] and then spending over 9 months filming on location in 2020 and 2021.[9]
