Mubarak Haruna (born January 22, 1999) is a Nigerian footballer who currently plays for Saint Mary's College Men's Soccer in the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Haruna was the recipient of the Nigerian Teen Choice Awards Male Sports Personality award for 2017. The award is a nationally recognized honor given to the best and most outstanding male athlete for that year and for his contributions to sport in Nigeria.
Career
Born in Nigeria, Mubarak Haruna began his athletic journey at Whitesands School where he represented the school competitively in sports and was brilliant. He played as a striker for the Whitesands soccer team and was very prolific. He scored 22 goals and provided 9 assists in 38 appearances. He was also the captain of the junior soccer team and assistant captain of the senior team. He led the team to the quarter-finals of the GTB Bank Heritage Cup in 2016, scoring crucial goals and providing assists for his teammates. His performances didn’t go unnoticed as he impressed football scouts and was shortlisted for screening by the Nigerian U-17 football team. He was also accepted into the FCB Soccer School in Lagos out of millions of Nigerians who participated in the trials. This showed Mubarak’s outstanding prowess in football. In November 2017, he was awarded the Male Sports Personality of the year at the Nigerian Teen Choice Awards as the most outstanding male athlete for that year and for his contributions to sport in Nigeria. He continued his football career at Merritt College in Oakland, California. At Merritt College, where he is the captain of the Men’s Soccer team and main goal scorer on the team. In the 2018 fall season, Mubarak scored 10 goals and provided 5 assists in 15 starts for the team. Subsequently, he was awarded the Bay Valley Conference Forward of the Year and made the shortlist for first-team all-conference due to his outstanding performances. Subsequently, he was invited for soccer trials with the LA Galaxy II in August 2018.
Mubarak is not only a great footballer but also an excellent sprinter and long jumper. He received numerous athletic awards and represented the school in local and state competitions. He was also appointed the captain of the athletics team and led the team in inter-school competitions where he won over 30 medals for the school in track and field events.
Haruna played college soccer for the Merritt College Thunderbirds men's soccer program. At the end of the 2018 season, he was named to the Bay Valley 1st Team All-Conference by the California Community Colleges Athletic Association (CCCAA) and was subsequently honored as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) for the 2018 season. On September 5, 2017, Haruna made his collegiate debut for Merritt, in a 3–1 loss against Ohlone College. In the same match, Haruna came off the bench and scored his first college goal.
Haruna sat out the 2019 season due to injury. In 2020, Mubarak was recruited to Saint Mary's College of California Gaels Men's Soccer Team.[2]
