Mughal E Azam play is a Bollywood musical play, produced by the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) and Shapoorji Pallonji. Most of the popular songs from the film are included in the play. It will be performed at the NCPA – Mumbai, from 21 October 2016 to the first week of November, followed by the staging in end-November for another two weeks into December at Siri Fort Auditorium, New Delhi. Mughal-e-Azam (1960, starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Madhubala and Dilip Kumar) is an Indian epic historical film, directed by K. Asif and produced by ShapoorjiPallonji.

Prince Salim's love for Anarkali (a courtesan) leads him to rebel against his father Emperor Akbar. The plot involves powerful a drama around this confrontation and amidst beautiful dance numbers., The soundtrack, inspired by Indian classical and folk music, comprised 12 songs and is considered among the finest soundtracks in the history of Indian cinema.


Nine years in the making and costing ten times the films in those days, Mughal-e-Azam remains the all time biggest grosser of Indian Box-office (inflation adjusted). Its dialogues remain an epitome of Indian cinema.

Such has been the power of the film that when it was re-released in colour in 2004 with six track digital sound that it again ran for 25 weeks in theatres. Mughal-e-Azam then also became the first B&W film in the world cinema to be made into colour.


Now in 2016,for the first time ever in India , a film is being presented on stage. Magnificent sets, opulent costumes and aesthetic dance numbers would be the highlight of this powerful drama on stage.
