Muhammad Qasim Maka (Sindhi: محمد قاسم ماڪا) is a prominent Sindhologist, Shah Abdul Latif Bhittae's Scholar,[1] Music director, Music composer,[2] Script writer,[3] Singer and Poet[4] of the Sindhi Language. He was born on 3 May 1953 at the Maka village of District Shikarpur, Sindh, Pakistan.[5]
Education
He got early education from his village Maka & elementary education from Lakhi Gulam Shah, passed Matriculation from Government High School Sukkur & completed intermediate education from Sachal College Hyderabad in 1972. He did Masters in Social Work from University of Sindh with flying colours in 1978.[6]
Professional career
He was appointed as an announcer & compere in Radio Pakistan Hyderabad. Later promoted as Host & Director of different Programs of PTV National. His Program Series "Suran Jo Safar" (Sindhi: سُرن جو سفر) was most watched programme by sindhi music lovers. In 1978 he was appointed Incharge in Audio-Video Section of University of Sindh Institute of Sindhology. On 7 January 2010 he was promoted as Director Institute of Sindhiology.[7][8]
His Contribution in Sindhi Music
Muhammad Qasim Maka has Collected all Sindhi Gramophone record of old sindhi music including first Sindhi Gramphone recorded in Germany and converted them into cassettes and Compact discs. He has released 3015 sindhi audio cassettes each audio cassette consists of 3 to 15 sindhi songs, total 30,000 sindhi songs of prominent folk & classical singers including Master Chander, Muhammad Ibraheim, Muhammad Juman, Mai Bhaghi, Abida Perveen, Muhammad Yousif, Ustaad Manzoor Ali Khan, Usttad Waheed Ali Khan, Jamal Faqeer, Sodhal Faqeer, Alan Faqeer, Jewani Bhae, Jiji Zareena Baloch, Noor Bano & Sanam Marvi. Muhammad Qasim Maka composed 11,452 sindhi songs under his own directions. He has also released 125 video albums of Sindhi music each video album consists of 7 to 15 songs, total 1500 video songs of Sindhi folk & classical music. Muhammad Qasim Maka has also written 40 Sindhi Sufi songs which were sung by popular sindhi Sufi singers, including Alan faqir, Mai Bhagi, Barkat Ali, Mumtaz Lashari, Soudhal Faqir, Jamal-ud-in Faqir, Gulam Rabani, and Sadam Hussain. He has documented 43 documentary sindhi films on ancient places of Sindh, Art & Craft in sindh and Sufi Saints of Sindh including Shah Abdul Latif Bhittai, Sachal Sarmast & Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. He has also recorded audio book of Shah Jo Risalo in the voice of Sayed Saleh Muhammad Shah.[9]
Reforms in Institute of Sindhology during his tenure
Many reforms were initiated by Muhammad Qasim Maka as a Director Institute of Sindhology including:
- Emergency Electricity System was installed at Institute of Sindhology to facilitate the national & international visiters.
- The Harmonium on which Ahmed Gulam Ali Chagla composed the National Anthem of Pakistan was brought & displayed in the museum of institute of Sindhology.
- New corners were added & devoted for the prominent personalities of Sindh, Pakistan e.g. Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Books Cornor, Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Pictures Cornor, Shamshair-ul-Haidri Cornor, Bashir Khan Qureshi Cornor, Alan Faqeer Cornor, Alam Chana Cornor.[10]
- First time a bookshop was established at Institute of Sindhology to facilitate students, scholars and community residing at nearest area of campus.[11]
- Introduced Certificate course and Diploma Course in Music Education[12]
