Music City Drum and Bugle Corps is a World Class competitive junior drum and bugle corps based in Nashville, Tennessee. Music City is a member of Drum Corps International (DCI).[1]
History[edit]
Music City Drum and Bugle Corps was founded in 2009 by Keith Hall as an Open Class drum and bugle corps after several music directors and drum corps fans expressed interest in starting a drum corps in the Nashville area. Hall marched with the Memphis Blues Drum and Bugle Corps back in 1980 and used to teach for the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps. His time with the Memphis Blues gave him a desire to start a drum corps. With help and funding from individuals, Music City fielded its first group.[2] The inaugural corps consisted of 47 members who competed in 7 shows in the Midsouth and Midwest area, finishing at the Drum Corps International Open Class World Championships.[3]
In the following years, Music City would grow in membership at a rapid rate, with a 64 member turnout in 2010, and a full sized corps turnout every year since.[4]
In 2013, Music City advanced to the Drum Corps International World Championships semifinals for the first time in their history, placing 25th overall, earning them full DCI membership. However, shortly after the 2013 season, Music City Youth in the Arts, Music City's parent organization, announced that the corps would fold due to being financially unable to continue operations. DCI immediately responded to this announcement by helping to assist the corps on financially getting back on its feet in order to save the corps. As a result, Music City was able to return to the field in 2014.[citation needed]
In 2017, after placing 4th place in the DCI Open Class Championships, and advancing to semifinals and placing 24th overall in the DCI World Championships, Music City was approved to compete in the World Class effective the 2018 season.[5]
Sponsorship[edit]
Music City Drum and Bugle Corps is sponsored by Music City Youth in the Arts, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) musical organization that has a board of directors. Brad Love serves as the president and Mike Webb serves as the executive director.[6]
