From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Musica Sequenza is an international chamber music ensemble that transforms the music of baroque composers into contemporary compositions. The ensemble was founded in 2008 by composer and bassoonist Burak Özdemir in New York City. It is established in Berlin since 2011.[1].

History[edit]

Musica Sequenza was founded as a chamber music project in 2008 at the Juilliard School in New York by the artistic director Burak Özdemir. Burak Özdemir was the first bassoonist in the history of Juilliard University to be admitted to the Artist Diploma Program and subsequently enrolled in the Music Technology Department. In the same year, the Juilliard School opened the course 'historical performance practice', Burak Özdemir joined as Baroque bassoonist. Thus, Musica Sequenza founded within the Juilliard School in New York City.

Today the ensemble consists of twenty soloists from different countries: Germany, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Finland, Bulgaria, Turkey, Australia, China, Japan and Korea. The ensemble plays on historical instruments of the 18th century and has a repertoire from the Renaissance to New Music.

The ensemble participates in an interdisciplinary artist collective for musicians, singers, dancers, choreographers, architects and visual artists. Over the years, Musica Sequenza has collaborated with such artists as Sasha Waltz, Rolando Villazón, Matthew Herbert, Hernan Cattaneo, Larisa Navojec, Kenneth Weiss, Daniel Bubeck and Van Rivers.

Musica Sequenza recorded the music of the film "Diego Velázquez" as part of a Velazquez international exhibition that opened in 2014 at the Grand Palais in Paris. Karim Aïnouz directed the film, Arte TV broadcasted it and later released in the form of an Arte Edition DVD.

The ensemble established the genre 'Electro-Baroque with the production 'Fuga: The Electro-Baroque Opera' performed at the Baruch Performing Arts Center in 2010 in New York[2]. Celebrating the 21st anniversary of the historic nightclub KitKat in Berlin in 2015, the ensemble was commissioned to produce an electro-baroque opera and created "Opera del Futuro". In the same year, the International Handel Festival in Halle commissioned "Sampling Baroque Handel", which became the first electro-baroque publication in the history of the record company Sony Music. In 2016, the International Bach Festival Schaffhausen ordered the second part "Sampling Baroque Bach"[3]

In 2018, Musica Sequenza premiered the Bach production "Atlas Passion" in collaboration with the Stadttheater Schaffhausen in Switzerland.

The program range of the ensemble combines baroque music, musical theatre, modern dance and electronic music, as well as video and lighting design. Various tours have brought Musica Sequenza to Turkey, Netherlands, Germany, France, Switzerland and the United States. Opera houses, international festivals and theatres regularly host their productions, including the Istanbul International Music Festival, Schaffhausen International Bach Festival, Oranjewoud Festival, Thüringer Bachwochen, Stadttheater Schaffhausen, Konzerthaus Berlin, International Handel Festival in Halle, Bach Academy Stuttgart, Alice Tully Hall and Radial System V.
