The Nadal–Wawrinka rivalry is between tennis players Rafael Nadal and Stan Wawrinka. In this matchup Nadal leads 16–3, however the two have contested many matches, including two Grand Slam finals and they have met in several prestigious tournaments[1].

Development[edit]

Nadal won the first 12 encounters, all in straight sets, including 2 finals, one of which is a Masters 1000 final at Madrid in 2013. from 2014 onward the pair has won an almost equal number of matches against each other (3–4) . Wawrinka scored his first win against Nadal in the 2014 Australian Open final in 4 sets , denying Nadal's double career slam.[2] In Paris 2015 , the final ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tournament of the year Wawrinka defeated Nadal in the quarterfinal,in two very tight tiebreak sets. Nadal won their second Grand Slam final, at the 2017 French Open[3].

Significance[edit]

Despite Nadal's 16–3 overall record against Wawrinka, Wawrinka has a 1–1 in Grand Slam finals. Moreover, in Nadal's 22 Grand Slam championship matches, Wawrinka is the only opponent to have defeated Nadal in a Grand Slam final apart from Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Rafael Nadal on the other side is the only opponent to have defeated Stan Wawrinka in a Grand Slam final.
