Issues[edit]

Tax increment financing[edit]

Tax increment financing (TIF) has been an issue in the 2016 campaign.

TIF is an economic development program that is funded by property tax dollars. Here is how it works:[6]

  1. Municipal governments establish areas that they believe are "economically blighted." These areas are called TIF districts.
  2. Some of the funds from the TIF district are redirected to other areas. Money is then used for economic development in those other areas, despite the purpose of the program being to help specific TIF districts with tax money from within those districts.
  3. In return, TIF money is used for economic development projects, like a housing facility or retail project. In theory, some people believe TIF projects will generate future property taxes inside the TIF districts.

Positions on business[edit]

"I'm just against the large corporations that basically think that this is part of what they're due just because they're in your state doing business, and I think it hurts the taxpayer". - Nancy Zettler[7]

Dallas police sniper murders[edit]

After Dallas police officers were murdered in 2016, former Congressman Joe Walsh sent out messages on Twitter that some people interpreted as threatening to President Obama and the Black Lives Matter movement. After Walsh sent his tweets, Nancy Zettler called upon her opponent, Alan Skillicorn, to "disavow Walsh's hate filled statements.”[8]

Skillicorn fundraised for Walsh in the past. Zettler attempted to connect Skillicorn’s past with Walsh to Walsh’s offensive tweets.[9]
