Napkin top

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A napkin top is a backless style of shirt consisting of a piece of fabric covering the front of the body and fastened in the back.

Description[edit]

The napkin top features a halter neckline and at least one other set of straps to hold the garment in place. Typically spaghetti straps are used to contribute to a “barely there” appearance. The top bears similarities to the “scarf top” or “bandana top” popularized in the 1990s in which a silk scarf is (or appears to be) tied around the upper body. Both styles may feature a pointed hem resembling the corner of a napkin or kerchief.[1] Because the napkin top is only held in place by thin straps, it is considered more revealing than the scarf top.

History[edit]

A July 2020 Fashionista trend piece noted the revival of 2000s-era halter tops.[2] The more specific napkin top trend was described the following month by Anna Laplaca of the fashion website Who What Wear, who cited its popularity among the cult brands favored by fashion influencers on Instagram. Laplaca included the top as part of the broader trend towards revealing garments in summer 2020.[3] Because of the similarity to the bandana top, the style has also been contextualized within the continued interest in 1990s-inspired fashions that began in the mid-2010s. Emirati fashion website Savoir Flair characterized the napkin top as a 2020 aesthetic treatment of a silhouette from the 1990s.[1]

The trend emerged amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, and sustainable fashion brand KES offered a silk napkin top that doubled as a face mask.[4]
