Nathaniel Nuno-Amarteifio (1943–2021) was a Ghanaian architect and a former mayor of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly.

Early life and Education[edit]

Mr. Nuno-Amarteifio (28 December 1943 – 20 December 2021) was a renowned architect and the former Mayor of the Accra Metropolis during the Rawlings Regime. He was a student at the Government Boys School in Accra for eight years. He had his secondary and sixth form education at the Achimota School between 1957 and 1964. After that, Mr. Amarteifio went on to study architecture at Howard University in Washington DC from 1964 to 1969 for his Bachelor of Science degree. He also pursued his master's degree at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York.[1]

Architecture[edit]

In June 2009, he undertook a photographic exhibition with Kofi Setordji, the distinguished Ghanaian sculptor and painter, under the banner “Architectural History of Accra”. The exhibition, which used black and white photographs, showcased landmark buildings that were erected between 1920 and 1930. He is known to have started a comprehensive development plan for Accra which was meant to make it one of the most beautiful cities in the world.[2]

Other Endeavor[edit]

He was appointed as the mayor of Accra between 1994 and 1998 during the tenure of the former President Jerry John Rawlings. He also wrote the book History of Architecture in Accra. He created trade and investment opportunities and other cultural exchanges with several members and business communities in Accra.

After he left office, he became a lecturer on urban management and contemporary Ghanaian art and culture.

Mr. Amarteifio was a strong force in the creative industry in Ghana and gave his last speech at the PROPAGHANA art exhibition on the 14th December at the Museum of Science and Technology.[3]
