Nathalia Beatriz Dora Peluso, better known as Nathy Peluso, (Luján, January 12nd, 1995) is a Spanish-Argentinean singer and songwriter who fuses soul, jazz, rap, salsa and swing.[1][2]. She’s one of the main exponents of the new Latin-European music vanguard[3]. Along with Rosalía, La Zowi and Bad Gyal, she is also a female benchmark of ratchet fashion among youth, a street style that claims the glamour del barrio (tracksuit, silicone nails and platform sneakers).[4]
Early life[edit]
Nathy Peluso lived in Saavedra (Buenos Aires) with her mother, an English teacher, her father, a psychologist, and her sister, Sofia Gabanna, also a singer. In 2004, Nathy and her family emigrated with the Italian nationality to Alicante, Spain, where she did ballet for nine years and trained as a federated gymnast[5]. After that, she moved to Murcia, where she began to study Communication and Advertising, a career she ended up quitting. Then, the singer decided to move to Madrid and study Physical Theater at the Rey Juan Carlos University, where she specialized in Pedagogy of Visual Arts and Dance[5]. When she arrived to Madrid, before becoming a singer, she had different jobs. Nathy worked in hospitality’s industry and was in some production chains. She also worked on assembling cardboard boxes in a factory. In addition, she was a waitress for the VIPS, Domino's Pizza and other places serving paellas.[2][6][7]
Life and career[edit]
At the age of 16, Nathy Peluso performed in hotels and restaurants in Torrevieja, Spain, interpreting classic songs by Frank Sinatra, Etta James and Nina Simone[7]. As a teenager, she started uploading covers to her YouTube channel[8]. When she was studying theater, she made electronic bases with her friends, which with they recorded and made videos, thanks to that they became a little known. This led Nathy to drop out of drama school in her last year[7]. After acting as a singer in Torrevieja, she took part into a choir group for eight years, and regularly uploaded classic versions of known songs to YouTube[citation needed].
Last year Nathy was hired by Inditex to design a clothing line for Bershka and has been the image of Adidas.[4] Currently, she has created a TikTok account, where she posts dancing and singing videos to get closer to her youngest audience. On platforms such as Spotify and YouTube she is one of the youngest artists who have millions of reproductions on her songs and videos.[4]
After launching the song "La Sandunguera", she performed at festivals such as Bilbao BBK Live 2018, Sonorama 2018[9], Sónar 2018[10] or FIB 2018[11] on her tour around Spain, and also performed in Latin America[12]. For this song, Nathy was nominated to Premios de la Música Independiente (MIN) 2019 for "Song of the Year" and "Best Music Video"[13]. Also, she has performed in some emblematic squares such as the Primavera Sound festival, in Barcelona. In a large part of these performances, she has been accompanied by her band "Big Menu", which shares the same producer (Peter Party)[14]. On April 30th, 2019, she announced the launch of her first book, "Deja que te combata", a compilation of her thoughts, projects and stories[15]. On April 3rd, 2020, Nathy Peluso and Rels B, who is also a singer, songwriter and music producer of the urban hip hop cultural genre, released "No se perdona", produced by Alizzz, Itchy & Buco, Lex Luthorz, Rafael Arcaute and Tunvao.[16] The singer is currently working on a new EP (still without a name) which has been recorded in Madrid, Barcelona, Buenos Aires, Miami and Los Angeles, and will be released on spring 2020 (this could change because of Covid-19).[4] Her current label is Sony Music Spain, and previously it was the trap group Pxxr Gvng, led by Yung Beef, a trap-punk group from Barcelona. [4]
Music style[edit]
Nathy Peluso grew up listening to a wide variety of music, from Ray Charles, Joao Gilberto and Ella Fitzgerald to Atahualpa Yupanqui or D’Angelo. From an early age, she listened to certain kind of music at home and realized that she felt strongly identified with those styles. After exploring different genres, her compositions gradually reached Hip Hop and took it over, turning into a "Latin style" of sorts, accompanied by jazz; using the language in a sonorous way. Nathy’s roots are Black music, such as blues, jazz and soul, and also more traditional styles like African rhythms[17], swing, salsa, Brazilian music, Argentinean rock, Hip Hop and Latin American Folk.
"I love trap, it’s a sound of our era, I listen to Travis Scott, Young Thug, Drake. But when they play Alma caribeña by Gloria Estefan I feel something special that connects with my roots, since my childhood I have grown up with Latin music."[4]
Although her point of reference is swing, the singer goes from blues to rap and from salsa to jazz. Nathy uses a particular accent: she has Colombian, Spanish, Dominican Republican and Cuban touches (vocabulary and accent) because she has been linked to many Latino teachers and students while studying theater, but she also pronounces "{c}" with her native Argentinean accent.[7]
Esmeralda[edit]
Esmeralda is Nathy Peluso’s first album. It was published on October 5th, 2017[18]. It is a mix that makes soul sounds like a cumbia and funk like a tropical song. In this album, Nathy contextualizes all her influences under a Latin filter and explores different textures and rhythmic couplings, doing a social criticism and approaching her personal path. This album is influenced by hip hop, latin and pop. We can find seven songs: "Alabame", "Dafne", "Daga", "Esmeralda", "Oreen Ishi", "Sandía" and "Kun Fu". A short time after, Nathy released "Corashe", a single which was going to mark a milestone in her music career, turning the single into a female empowering anthem.[19][20][21]
La Sandunguera[edit]
La Sandunguera[22][23] is an album of six songs published on April 6th, 2018, produced by Peter Party. The song "Estoy Triste" shows the feelings of anger and sadness, "Gimme Some Pizza" revolves around the idea that food is one of the greatest pleasures in life, all with a single sentence, "La Passione" talk about passionate love, "Ma Time" sets out where could we spend our time, as it goes very fast, "La Sandunguera", the title also given to the album and also Nathy's most listened to song, represents joy, enjoyment, fun, partying and family (Nathy wanted to appreciate everything she has) and finally, "Hot Butter" that explores the idea of laughing at wasting, and how humans are part of a society where everyone wants to show what they have[24]. In the end, Nathy has been able to connect with Trap’s audience with this Latin jazz album. This launching was accompanied by a tour around Europe and Latin America.[20][7]
"Business Woman"[edit]
"Business Woman" is the first offering from Nathy Peluso's new album, which is yet about to release.[25] It became very popular because it is a rap in which Nathy talks about the role of women in the music industry with energy, strength and empowerment. The clip is directed by the Bradley & Pablo duo (responsible for videos for artists such as Rosalía, Dua Lipa or Juice Wrld) and it comes signed by Fede Vinder, Rafael Arcaute and Peter Party.
Nathy Peluso also presented "Business Woman" in Operación Triunfo, a musical talent show from TVE (Spanish Television), on the occasion of the celebration of International Women's Day, when there was a gala loaded with feminine and feminist music. One of the show's contestants, Anajú, covered the song "La Sandunguera" to face her nomination, and Nathy thanked her for that at the end of her performance.[26]
