The National University Heart Centre, Singapore (Abbreviation: NUHCS) is the country's second national specialty centre under the National University Health System (NUHS) for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart problems.[1] The centre is supported by knowledge and information from the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) of NUS, which also collaborates with other research institutes like A*STAR.[2][3]
Achievements[edit]
NUHCS was the first in Singapore in 2016 to carry out heart valve replacement without the use of open heart surgery to treat Tetralogy of Fallot, with the replacement valve delivered via a leg vein near the groin.[4] This minimally invasive procedure negates the need to do two open heart surgeries to correct the condition.
NUHCS is also part of the ATTRaCT (Asian neTwork for Translational Research and Cardiovascular Trials) initiative, which is an initiative by the government to bring together leading cardiologists and heart disease researchers from A*STAR and other national health institutions in Singapore to look into root causes of heart diseases and reduce the risk of occurrence of heart failure.[5]
Leadership[edit]
The National University Heart Centre (NUHCS) is led by Centre Director Professor Tan Huay Cheem, while the Cardiovascular Research Institute is led by Director Professor A. Mark Richards.
Location and infrastructure[edit]
The NUHCS is located at levels 1, 2 and 3 at the NUH Main Building serving both full-paying and subsidised patients. Located directly above the Kent Ridge MRT Station (circle line) and designed with patients in mind, it brings about greater accessibility and convenience.[6]
In addition, the NUHCS operates four wards - Wards 20 (Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit), 28 (Cardiac Monitoring Unit and Coronary Care Unit), 63 (Cardiology Ward) and 64 (Cardiothoracic & Vascular Ward) at the NUH Main Building.
