Natural Flavors is an American rock band formed in Tempe, Arizona in 2017. The band consists of Andrew Lineweaver (guitar), Hunter Langenhorst (keyboard), Josh Stovall (bass), Ryan Kemmer (drums), and Sean Rollins (guitar). Their debut album In Bloom was released on July 2, 2021.[1]
History
Formation and name (2017)
Natural Flavors was founded in 2017 in Tempe, Arizona when drummer Ryan Kemmer and guitarist Sean Rollins met in a computer programming class at Arizona State University. They became involved with the ASU School of Music as members of the university's Gospel Choir, Steel Drum Band, and percussion studio. They soon joined forces with keyboardist Hunter Langenhorst, guitarist Andrew Lineweaver, and bassist Josh Stovall who were pursuing undergraduate music degrees.
The group's name was inspired by the nutrition facts on a can of sparkling water. One afternoon in late 2017, Hunter, Ryan, and Sean were sitting in their college apartment brainstorming names for their recently formed band. In this moment, Sean was enjoying a can of sparkling water. Sean finished the beverage and set it down on a table. Ryan picked up the empty can and saw the words "Natural Flavors" listed as one of its primary ingredients. In that moment the band decided that they would be known as Natural Flavors.[2]
First Singles (2018-2020)
In 2018, just a few months after meeting Natural Flavors began writing and recording their own original music. Over the next two years, they released six singles produced on a laptop running Ableton Live by Ryan Kemmer. In 2019, the band began playing shows regularly across their hometown of Phoenix, Arizona, however stopped playing shows in March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
On October 10, 2020, Natural Flavors released their live album entitled Live in the Living Room This album featured live audio and video recordings of the band's original songs, including two debut song performances of Tidal Wave and RIP, as they performed in their living room.
In Bloom (2021–present)
On March 16, 2021, Natural Flavors announced via Twitter that their debut LP album entitled In Bloom would be released during the upcoming summer months.[3] In June 2021, the band released two singles in anticipation of the album release. RIP was released on June 11, along with a , and Slap in the Face was released on June 25.
Natural Flavors released their debut album In Bloom on July 2, 2021[4], along with a music video for their song Blue[5]. The album was composed, recorded and produced entirely by the band members during their time attending university.[6] Each song has a completely different feel and genre, ranging from indie rock to Latin jazz, and blues.[7]
On February 10, 2022, Natural Flavors released an online concert album series titled In Bloom Studio Sessions. The series features a live studio performance of their entire In Bloom album. The release media includes audio and video recordings, filmed in the band's living room using a series of GoPros. The release includes multiple video formats including a multicam versions[8], a 360 video versions, and short vertical video versions on the band's TikTok account[9].
Musical style
Natural Flavors' musical style has been described as indie pop[6], funk rock[10], pop rock[11], and dreampop[11], R&B[11][7], folk[7], shoegaze[11], soul, and blues[7] influences. Their sound is comprised of mostly acoustic instruments, including vocal harmonies[6], drumset, hand percussion[6], keys, and clean electric guitars without much distortion[11] Each band member contributes as a vocalist and multi-instrumentalist; trading roles inbetween and during songs.[6] This unique combination of instruments gives the band a sound reminiscent of 2000s rock music. The band has been compared to artists such as Arctic Monkeys, Tame Impala, Third Eye Blind, Turnover, Incubus, Radiohead, Tom Misch, and Oasis.[11]
The band's lyrics have been described as existential introspections which explore the highs and lows of life through emotive, romantic, and sometimes cliche poetry.[6][7] The band's lyrics are written collaboratively by all the members. Their lyrics often include literary tropes to express evoke emotion to the listener. The band's songs often feature prosody in which the musical often reflect the emotion or literal meaning of the lyrics. Natural Flavors' studio recordings often feature sound design including inspired by musique concrète that samples environmental sounds such as a telephone dial tone or ocean. [12] The song RIP a love story may not end very happily because feelings can do a lot of good and bad to a person at the same time.[10] Blue or the ambivalent emotions of a breakup on RIP, for example.[7] Falling Down is a romantic ode that goes as simple “if the sky is falling down, tell me would you be around”.
