Aquiles Espinosa (born December 25, 1988), better known by his stage name Nawlage (pronounced "knowledge”), is an American recording artist turned producer. Raised in Lawrence, Massachusetts, he initially gained recognition performing at local events in New England. He is best known for his single "Husband or Wife", which was released in 2006 (later remixed and re-released in 2012 featuring French Montana).
Nawlage has cited fellow local rappers, Termanology and Lou Armstrong as artists who had influenced him early on. He has teamed up with ERIKMVSXN to form the production group, ProRefx (formerly known as NdroiDBeats).
Early life[edit]
Aki Espi was born on December 25, 1988, in Oceanside, California. His father is a Dominican American former Marine, and his mother is a Dominican American Cosmetologist, who relocated from Brooklyn, New York to Lawrence, Massachusetts[1]; he was taught to embrace the culture of his Dominican ancestors. He learned to speak Spanish allowing him to be a bilingual recording artist.
As a young teenager, he began recording songs at home using headphones and a cassette player.
He is related to Dominican musician Chichí Peralta.
Career[edit]
Music[edit]
In 2005, Nawlage relocated to Clearwater, Florida where he would go on to write and record his hit song "1,393 Miles Away" Produced by Xplosive Beats. The following year, he sold the song to Korean rap group the Honey Family/Leessang who would later go on to release a Korean version of the song.[2]
In 2010, Nawlage teamed up with Fuego (singer) for the single “Ella”[3]. The music video was released in May 2010, featuring Lil Wayne’s ex-girlfriend Tammy Torres,[4] with cameos from Gunplay (rapper) and Boy Wonder (producer). The single would later be remixed by Notch (musician)[5]. Nawlage was doing a series of shows with Serani[6] as the dancehall movement was progressively growing.
In 2012, with the help of long time friend Jay Walker & Free World Muzic, they reached out to French Montana with the hopes of featuring him on the remix to his single "Husband or Wife" which had been originally released in 2006. French Montana & Chinx loved the song so much that they later asked for permission to put the song on Coke Boys 3, which dropped April 13, 2012[7]. In an interview with Tim Westwood, Westwood talks about Husband or Wife single later that year, after being told by Tim Westwood that his new song "Husband or Wife" was getting a lot of play; French Montana shed light on the track, stating that singer Mavado had already recorded a verse for the record and that it was to be a single on his upcoming album Excuse My French[8].
After some hesitation from Nawlage's former camp, French Montana and his team decided to move on from the idea and ended up using Freaks (French Montana song) along side Nicki Minaj as the single on the album instead.
In 2013, Lou Armstrong reached out to Nawlage for a collaboration. The track, produced by J. Cardim, “Looks Like She Wants It” featured French Montana. Although filming for the video had begun, the video featuring Cardi B was never released.
In November 2016, Nawlage was featured on Ben Mader’s track “City Of Tings” alongside Dreezy.
