Neha Thakar
Neha Thakar (1980) is a contemporary artist from India. Her work focuses on temporary facets of life using "air, smell and ice," according to the Hindustan Times.[1]
Early life and education
She hails from Baroda (vadodara) in Gujarat.[2] Born in 1980, she studied at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M.S. University of Baroda;[1] completing both her bachelor's and master's in painting there.
Career
Thakar has gained prominence in the Indian contemporary art space after she was recognised for her work by ART India.[3] She has made an impression in the Art space and is known for the novelty factor in her work and for the freshness of the themes she chooses to work on in her installations. She was awarded the ART India-IHC promising Artist Award 2010 for her melting ice installation titled Dissolving Boundary.[3]
Thakar does not work with oil paints or acrylics; instead, she likes to experiment with unusual materials. She has been known to use ephemeral material like ice.[4] This means that her installations are essentially time based. Her time based installations feature objects carved from ice blocks - objects like frosted apples and gift boxes which melt within a few hours. Thakar documents her installations using photography and video, so it is this 'documentation' which is the object that Thakar makes.[3] Some have termed her work as environmental art, because her installations make use of natural elements and depend on the interaction of the climate with those elements.[5]
Thakar is also a Visiting Lecturer at Faculty of Fine Arts, Veer Narmad University, Surat Archived 2012-05-04 at the Wayback Machine since 2010.
Neha Thakar on her work
“Generally my work relays on a process where transformations ultimately carry certain meaning and value in a specific context. This process enables me to create myriad visuals within a visual and the changing visual formation creates an illusion which compels the onlooker to participate not as an outsider but to involve with the ongoing process. The natural tendency of both the mediums; the disintegration of ice and the disseminative quality of smell, the emergence and the divergence and the celebration with natural world explores the fleeting and ephemeral, notions of being and time, and within visual construction process remains as a central interest”[6]

Art Installations
Dissolving Boundary - 2009
Neha's melting ice installation Dissolving Boundary was created at the Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, Rajasthan. She had created this installation during a British Council Residency in 2009. She went on to win the ART India magazine's Promising Artist Award 2010 for this installation. For this installation at the 15th Century Mehrangarh Fort, Neha stacked an arched window with ice slabs that melted away. The installation attempted to bring out the contrast between an ever-changing present and an unchanging past, with the present dissolving into the past as the ice blocks melted into water and trickled down the fort walls.[3]
Smell Chambers - 2010
Smell Chambers was installed during the KHOJ Peers Residency in 2010 and is a good example of the experiential nature of Thakar's installations. The installation had two rooms which 'held' the smells of coffee and chloroform respectively and a third room which 'held' its own smell. The objective of the installation was to make the viewers recollect the memories associated with these smells.[3]

One can also term it as environmental art, because of the celebration with the natural world ranging from permanent constructions of objects and interventions with ice.
