Stephen Thorpe (born 30 April 1981) is a contemporary painter living and working between London and Hong Kong.

Personal life[edit]

Stephen Thorpe was born on 30 April 1981 in Margate, England. He received his undergraduate degree in Painting from Gray’s School of Art in Aberdeen, followed by an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art in London.[1]

Career[edit]

Thorpe is known for his interiors-based paintings that feature brightly coloured compositions peppered with symbols. His work is informed by his interests in sociology, psychology and psychoanalysis.[2]

Following graduation from Gray’s School of Art, Thorpe was an Assistant Curator at Summerhall in Edinburgh.[3]

In 2012, Thorpe was the 1st Prize Winner of Saatchi’s Showdown Prize, judged by Kirstine Roepstorff and Matthias Weisher.[4]

In 2013, he was the recipient of the Basil H. Alkazzi, Royal College of Art Award (formerly known as The Basil H. Alkazzi Foundation Scholarship Award), together with notable artists including Hurvin Anderson, Matthew Burrows and Ryan Mosley.[5]

Stephen Thorpe joined Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) as a Professor of Painting and Foundation Studies in 2018.[6]
