Newton Waterproofing Systems (a trading name of John Newton & Company Ltd) is a UK supplier of structural waterproofing and damp proofing materials. The company traces its origins to 1848 and is based in Tonbridge, Kent.[1][2]

History

The business was established in South London in 1848 by John Newton as a supplier to the building trades.[3] Trade journals describe the firm's early use and commercialisation of ventilated damp-proof membranes in the 1930s under the Newtonite name, with later polyethylene, mesh-faced variants arriving in the 1980s. Newton first invented the cavity drain method for basement waterproofing in the mid-1980s, with the introduction of Newton System 500.[4]

In 2022, Newton expanded UK coverage by opening a northern distribution centre in Leeds.[5]

Operations and products

Newton supplies materials and systems for below-ground structural waterproofing, including cavity drain systems and damp-proof membranes (such as Newlath), serving contractors and specifiers in the UK and Ireland.[6] Corporate details are filed in the UK under John Newton & Company Ltd and Newton Waterproofing Systems Ltd.[7][8]

Training and CPD

The firm provides continuing professional development (CPD) seminars for construction professionals through the RIBA CPD Providers Network.[9]

Sustainability

In January 2021, trade press reported that Newton became the first UK waterproofing supplier to have an entire waterproofing solution certified to the BES 6001 responsible-sourcing standard by BRE Global (the Newton CDM/Type C system).[10]

Recognition

Newton has received UK construction-sector awards reported by independent organisers and trade media. At the 2022 National Building and Construction Awards, the company won the Green/Sustainability category.[11][12] Trade press has also covered Newton's wins at the Property Care Association Best Practice Awards in 2022.[13]
