The Honourable Justice Nicholas James Owens is an Australian judge of the Federal Court of Australia, serving since 18 December 2024.[1] His appointment was one of eight announced by the Commonwealth Attorney-General on 6 December 2024.[2]
Early life and education
Owens graduated from the University of Adelaide with a Bachelor of Arts in 1997 and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) in 1999. In 2001 he completed a Master of Laws at Harvard Law School.[1]
Legal career
Owens served as associate to the Chief Justice of Australia, the Hon Murray Gleeson AC,[3] and worked in New York as an associate at Sullivan & Cromwell. He was admitted as an attorney in New York in 2002 and as a legal practitioner in New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory in 2003. He was called to the New South Wales Bar in 2004 and appointed Senior Counsel in 2016.[1]
Judicial career
On 6 December 2024 the Attorney-General announced Owens’ appointment to the Federal Court, with his commission commencing on 18 December 2024 in the Sydney Registry.[2][1] He was formally welcomed at a ceremonial sitting of a Full Court in Sydney on 27 February 2025.[3]
