Nicolas Carra is an American Republican politician who currently serves as the Mayor of Raritan, New Jersey. He is the youngest person ever elected to the post.[3]
Early life and education
Carra was born in New Brunswick, New Jersey. His mother, Denise Carra (née Hudak) and maternal grandfather, Anthony R. Hudak, both served on the Raritan Borough Council.[4][5][6] His grandfather also served as Mayor of Raritan from October 2005 to November 2006.[7]
Carra is a 2014 graduate of Bridgewater Raritan High School in Bridgewater, New Jersey.[8] He then went on to Raritan Valley Community College, where in 2016, he earned an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts.[3] In 2018, Carra graduated from Rutgers University–New Brunswick. He majored in political science and minored in history.[9]
Career
After graduating from Rutgers in 2018, Carra began an internship for New Jersey's 16th legislative district State Senator Kip Bateman. In 2020, he was hired as a full time legislative aide and stayed with Bateman until his retirement from the New Jersey Senate at the end of 2021.[10] In January 2022, Carra began working for the non-profit New Jersey SHARES, Inc. as Director of External Affairs.[11][10] In 2023, Carra was appointed by Raritan Mayor Zachary R. Bray to the Somerset Raritan Valley Sewerage Authority. He resigned in December of that year before becoming Mayor.[10]
Carra began his term as mayor on January 1, 2024.[3] In 2016 he was elected as Raritan's youngest-ever council member, at the age of 20.[12] In 2024 he became Raritan's youngest-ever mayor at the age of 27.[13] In 2017, he was sworn in as a councilmember on the Borough Council. He was re-elected as a councilmember in 2019 and 2022.[14][15][16] He was chosen by the Borough Council to serve four consecutive terms as Council President from 2020 through 2023.[3]
In January 2024, Carra was appointed by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy to the New Jersey Commission on National and Community Service.[17]
