Nikolai Petrovsky is an Australian immunologist, endocrinologist and vaccine developer. He is Professor of Medicine and Director of Endocrinology at Flinders University.[1] He is founder and chairman of Vaxine Pty Ltd, which has developed vaccines against SARS and MERS and is currently[when?] developing a vaccine for SARS-COV-2.[2][not in citation given][3]
Education and career[edit]
Petrovsky obtained an MBBS in Medicine from the University of Tasmania in 1982, and a Ph.D in Immunology from the University of Melbourne in 1996.[citation needed]
COVID-19[edit]
COVID-19 vaccine[edit]
Petrovsky has been working on a recombinant protein-based COVID-19 vaccine called COVAX-19.[4] The vaccine caused a controversy when the vaccine wasn't approved by Australian authorities following a Phase III trial in Iran.[5] A federal Health Department spokeswoman rejected this claim and said all applications and being treated "with the greatest priority."[6] In March 2022, the vaccine failed to pass the first phase of clinical trials.[7] In April 2022, Petrovsky launched a second trial.[8]
COVID-19 origins[edit]
Petrovsky published a study on SARS-COV-2 using computer modelling, concluding that the virus' spike protein is best adapted to humans out of all the species, suggesting a possible lab origin.[9] The consensus among relevant experts is that Petrovsky's finding is likely spurious, and that no such pre-adaptation exists.[10]
