Nishant Panicker (born 28 March 1998) is an Indian classical musician in the Hindustani music tradition. He belongs to the Agra-Atrauli Gharana (singing style).

Early Life

Nishant was initiated into Hindustani classical music at the age of 6. His initial training started under Shri Anant Heggar Hegde. He received vocal lessons from the sarod maestro Pundit Rajeev Taranath (2005-2008) in Bangalore. Pt. Taranath initiated him in the art of raga elaboration and taan creation. When Pundit Taranath moved to Mysore, he entrusted Nishant to Vidushi Lalith J. Rao, of the Agra-Atrauli Gharana. Nishant has been training with Vidushi Rao from 2008.

Career

Nishant gave his first solo concert in 2005, at the age of 7. [1]. Since then, he has performed at venues across the country. [2][3][4] His notable performances include Ek Jhalak, Seasons through Ragas, Sursagar Sankranti Concert, Devnandan Ubhayaker Yuva Sangeet Utsav and Kanara Saraswat Association concert.

He has sung for musicals produced by his guru Vidushi Rao. These include Raga Rang Samay Yatra[5], Bhairav to Bhairavi[6], Agra Gharana Ek Vatavriksh[7], Panch Rangi Raagon ka ek Guldasta[8], Naman Sajan Piya[9] and Namananjali[10], Compositions of Agra Maestros[11]. He has also contributed to the recording of several compositions of Ustad Khadim Hussain Khan for the archival project Naman Sajan Piya.

Nishant has been a regular performer since 2009, in the productions of Sunaad, a group dedicated to promoting Hindustani classical music. These productions include Raga Katha (2007), Raga Sarita (2008)[12], Swar Katha Upanishad (2011)[13] and Isha Rumi Beyond Form (2013)[14].

Nishant is also a Kathak dancer (a form of Indian classical dance) [15]. He has been learning Kathak since 2009. He has participated in Kathak workshops conducted in Mumbai and Bangalore by Padma Vibhushan Pandit Birju Maharaj and disciples.

He is an alumnus and the Best Outgoing Student (2015-16) of the National Public School, Koramangala. Currently, he is pursuing BSc Biology at Azim Premji University.
