Noah Robert Houghton (January 22, 2008, Brisbane, Australia – April 9, 2025) was an Australian-born Russian GRU spy, who was responsible for Russia's success in the Kursk Counter-Offensive during February-March 2025. Houghton is presumed dead within Ukraine, he remains wanted by Interpol for charges of Terrorism.

Early Life

Houghton was born in Brisbane, Australia, to an Australian father and a Russian mother. He spent his formative years in Australia, attending school until the age of 15. After his 15th birthday, Houghton began expressing support for Russian military efforts, including the Russian Invasion of Ukraine. He became involved in various online communities aligned with Russian state narratives, including role-playing groups on the gaming platform ROBLOX and multiple Telegram and Discord channels, amassing a following of over 300 users within his own community.

Political Views

Houghton had been very vocal about his political views throughout his time on the internet, having adopted a Far Right ideology. He frequently used the popular internet phrase "The west has fallen" and voiced admiration for the Russian Federation, referring to it as "the greatest country in the world" and stating his intent to relocate there.

Leading up to Russian Contact

Following his parents’ divorce, Houghton and his mother traveled to Moscow under the pretense of visiting relatives. However, flight records do not confirm the details of their travel. No commercial flight logs could be traced matching their itinerary, and some flights during that period were designated under the Russian Air Force, limiting public information. A photograph posted by Houghton during the flight serves as the primary visual record of their journey.

Chat logs from Discord servers associated with Houghton, along with additional images he shared, indicate he spent approximately one month in Russia. These include photographs of him in what appeared to be a Russian hotel and messages confirming his presence in the country

It remains unclear exactly when or how initial contact was made between Houghton and officials from the Russian state. However, based on digital communication records, it is assumed that any such engagement occurred during his known period of residence in Russia.

Known Involvement

Nikolas Bolshevik Assassination Attempt

Nikolas Bolshevik is a prominent Georgian politician and journalist known for his outspoken criticism of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which he has publicly condemned as illegal. He previously served as Prime Minister of Georgia from 2017 to 2019 and held the position of Foreign Minister in 2020. Since 2022, Bolshevik has emerged as a vocal opponent of Russian foreign policy.

On November 29, 2024, while on a diplomatic visit to the United States during the New York elections, Bolshevik was the target of an assassination attempt. He was reportedly attacked by unidentified masked individuals aboard a public bus in the Bronx. Following the incident, he was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical professionals identified symptoms consistent with exposure to a Novichok-class nerve agent, along with signs of severe physical debilitation. Subsequent investigations conducted jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Interpol led to the conclusion that Noah Houghton had orchestrated the attack. Surveillance and travel records indicated that Houghton had entered the United States on multiple occasions in the months prior, during which he is believed to have coordinated with operatives within the country.

As a result of these findings, Houghton was officially identified as an agent of the Russian GRU. He was subsequently banned from entry into Australia, the European Union, and the United States, and placed under an Interpol Red Notice. He was also added to multiple international watchlists as a wanted individual in connection with attempted assassination and acts of international terrorism. This would be the last time Houghton would travel to the United States according to official records.

Robert Noah Houghton was confirmed to have ordered the assassination attempt on Nikolas Bolshevik.

On June 30, 2025, Nikolas Bolshevik publicly announced via the social media platform Discord the establishment of a private mercenary unit operating in Ukraine, with the stated objective of locating Noah Houghton and bringing him to justice. This declaration came less than a year after an assassination attempt on Bolshevik, which resulted in severe injuries and attracted significant media attention. According to available reports, the mercenary unit consists of an estimated 10 to 60 members, primarily individuals personally known to Bolshevik, including close friends and acquaintances with prior military experience. The announcement and formation of the unit elicited international attention, with the Russian Ministry of Defence issuing a formal condemnation, characterizing the initiative as a "NATO invasion of Russia." Analysts have noted that the development reflects broader regional tensions and raises questions about the role of private military actors in ongoing conflicts.

Involvement in the Kursk Counter-Offensive

On 11 March 2025, Russian Telegram channels affiliated with pro-military sources reported that Noah Houghton had participated in the Kursk Counter-Offensive earlier that month. According to these sources, Houghton was present near the village of Kurilovka, located south of Sudzha, and played a role in an advance that placed significant pressure on Ukrainian defensive positions. Further reports identified Houghton as a participant in a covert operation referred to as Operation Potok (“Stream”), during which Russian forces allegedly utilized the abandoned Urengoy–Pomary–Uzhhorod natural gas pipeline to infiltrate Ukrainian positions near Sudzha. The maneuver reportedly contributed to the Ukrainian retreat from Sudzha and nearby settlements, attributed in part to Houghton's involvement in electronic warfare and communications disruption.

Photographs circulated on Russian military-aligned Telegram channels appeared to show Houghton in uniform during the operation, with claims that he held the rank of sergeant at the time. His role in commanding the advance through the pipeline was widely discussed within those circles.

As confirmed by photos publicised by Russian Military telegrams, Noah Houghton played a significant role in the counter-offensive, reportedly commanding the attack on Sudzha through the pipeline. These photos would confirm that Noah Houghton is a Sergeant within the Russian Forces.

Promotion and Appearance Alteration

In the months following the counter-offensive, Houghton was reportedly promoted to the rank of lieutenant, making him one of the fastest-rising junior officers in recent GRU-affiliated operations. This rapid advancement sparked mixed reactions in online pro-Russian communities. While some praised his performance and viewed the promotion as a reward for operational success, others speculated about the possibility of him acting as a double agent for Western intelligence services. Many would also note his significant appearance change, and weight increase. Observers also noted a significant change in Houghton’s physical appearance during this period, including marked weight gain and facial differences. Reports from Russian military sources suggested that Houghton may have undergone plastic surgery, allegedly in response to multiple assassination attempts attributed to Ukrainian Special Operations Forces (SSO).

Inclusion on the Myrotvorets "Kill list" and presumed death

Quoting Houghtons continued involvement in operations against Ukraine and accusations of warcrimes the Myrotvorets center added Houghton to the Kill list on the 3rd of May 2025. The center reports that Houghton was killed during fighting around the settlement of Karpivka in the Chernihiv Oblast of Ukraine on the 22nd of July 2025. It is unknown what AFU units were in the area at the time or the mechanism of Houghtons death. However it is believed by Ukrainian Telegram channels he was killed by a fibre optic FPV drone that was able to bypass the jammers attached to the Toyota Chaser he smuggled over from Australia shortly after his first trip to Russia. However there is no photographic evidence or first hand accounts to confirm his death. Due to how recent his death was there has been no further action to be reported at this time.
