Kornel von Feuchtersleben (25 January 1903 – 11 September 1975) was a Hungarian Equestrian and Hussar Major during WW2.[4]

Early life[edit]

Born in Ókér, Serbia on 25 January 1903, he was the son of Kalman Smiha von Detteni and was brought up from childhood by his Aunt and Uncle, the von Feuchterslebens in Hungary.[5] In 1934, Kornel travelled to Balatonalmádi where he met his future wife Baroness Katalin von Feuchtersleben. After spending some time with her during summer break, Kornel had to go but wanted to keep in touch. Two years later they decided to get married, the next year their first child was born. Cornelius von Feuchtersleben, later nicknamed as "Kisko" was born with a brain haemorrhage.[6] Which later caused his death at age nine. Kornel was then appointed as Hussar Major when he became the Hussar Choreographer for the 'French Equestrian Team.' It was then that he had his second child Ilona von Feuchtersleben was born in 1941.[4]

Moving to Australia[edit]

Kornel, Katalin and their two young children packed up everything of importance to them and travelled to Austria in their car, stopping and starting constantly, avoiding bombings over the refugee trail, they arrived in Murau. Kisko, now getting very sick, was taken to the Stolzalpe Kinderheim, after two months. Kisko passed away at age nine. Kornel was forced to go to the Eastern Front in Russia. They never thought they would ever see each other again. In 1951 Kornel went back to Austria to find Katalin and Ilona, he soon remembered his talking to Katalin about immigrating to either America or Australia. After arriving at the docks in Italy he found Katalin and Ilona, they were boarding the last boat to Australia. Kornel was able to get the last pass on. They later arrived in Bonagilla.[7] After almost a year Kornel was offered a job at the 'State Rivers and Water Supply Commission' in Melbourne. Kornel met with Anne Mackey from 'The Good Neighbour Council.' Anne Mackey provided them with a place to stay at 13 Middlesex Road Surrey Hills.[8]

Life in Australia[edit]

Kornel bought a place in Wandin, Victoria. Where he created a learn to ride school called Lo'Lodge,[9] which was very successful up to the day it closed following his death in Saarbrücken Germany in 1975 after he fell while walking off a boat.[10]
