North Maharashtra is a geographical region in the Maharashtra state of India. It comprises the Nashik, Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon districts.[1]
History
Chalukya kings ruled the southern part of the region during ancient times.[2][full citation needed] The 160 sq. meters fort in Parola is believed to have once belonged to the father of Queen of Jhansi.[3] On 13 March 1795, Marathas defeated the Nizam of Ahmadnagar and Jalgaon district became part of the Maratha Kingdom.[3]:6–8
In 1956, Jalgaon became part of the newly established Bombay State and, in 1960, after the formation of Maharashtra, it became part of Maharashtra State.
Geography
In the summer season, the temperature in the region climbs to over 44 °C.[4]
Rivers
This region has the Godavari river at Nashik. The Tapi, Panjhara river are in Dhule, and Nandurbar district.[5]
Dams
Jalgaon district has the Hatnur dam on the Tapti river, as well as the Garbardi dam near Pal hill station, and the Waghur dam near Jamner town. Nashik district has the Gangapur, and Nandur-Madheshwar dam on the Godavari river.[6]

- Jalgaon district -
Farmers of this district grow Jowar, Cotton, different kinds of lentils, Chickpeas, Wheat.
- Nashik district -
Common crops in this region are Rice, Jowar, Ground nuts, Onions, Wheat, Sugarcane, and the most grown crop of this district is Grapes.
- Dhule district -
Cotton, Jowar, Ground nuts, lentils, Wheat, Chickpeas.
- Nandurbar district -
Rice, Jowar, Ground nuts, Maize, Chickpeas, and various lentils are some crops that farmers usually grow here.[7]
Economy
The economy of the region relies on agriculture, and common varieties of crops include cotton, sugarcane, lentils, maize, bananas, peas, and wheat. The Jalgaon district is informally called the "Banana Capital of India." The district is the largest producer of bananas in Maharashtra and grows the world's seventh-largest banana crop.[8]
Nashik district is also a leader in grape production; only Niphad, in Dindori talukas, is ahead of Nashik in grape growing in this part of North Maharashtra.[9]
Educational facilities
North Maharashtra University serves the Dhule, Nandurbar, and Jalgaon districts. Its headquarters is located in Jalgaon.[10][11]
Culture
Marathi poet Bahinabai Chaudhary was born in Bhadli village near Bhusawal in Jalgaon district. Poet Balkavi Thombre and Vishnu Vaman Shirwadkar, writers of many acclaimed poetry works by scholars of Marathi literature, were both from the region. Thombre was born in Jalgaon district and was a child prodigy. Shirwadkar was also a prominent novelist; his play Natsamrat is considered an epic work of literature in the Maharashtra state.
