Northern Data AG is a multinational corporation headquartered in Frankfurt that specializes in high performance computing solutions.[2]
Northern Data AG was established through the merger of German Northern Bitcoin AG and American Whinstone US, Inc..[3][4] The merger was announced in November 2019 and completed in early 2020.[3] In April 2020 the company acquired Canadian Kelvin Emtech Group, also specialized in data centers.[5] Customers associated with Northern Data AG include companies such as Canaan Inc. or SBI Crypto.[6][7] Northern Data AG is an Aktiengesellschaft and listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange.[8]
The company provides solutions for high-performance computing with stationary and mobile high-tech data centers[9] The data centers are set up and controlled with artificial intelligence and self-developed software.[2] As of 2020, Northern Data AG is building a new HPC data center in Rockdale, Texas.[4] It is supposed to amount to a power output of up to 1 GW (gigawatt) by the end of 2020 and 3.6 GW by 2023.[10] Besides the center in Rockdale, Northern Data i.a. operates mobile data centers in the Lefdal mine data center, a former olivine mine in Lefdal (Norway).[11]
