Noteshelf is an app designed for note-taking, journaling, pdf annotation, and markup. It is developed by Fluid Touch Pte.Ltd, a Singapore based software development company, with its development centre in Hyderabad, India. The app allows users to take handwritten notes with the Apple Pencil or other styluses, and also to create shapes, import and annotate PDFs and annotate on pictures. The name comes from the “shelf” view where users can create and store multiple notebooks and documents. It also provides audio recording, handwriting to text conversion, and handwriting recognition in major international languages.

Noteshelf is available as a ‘one-time payment’ app on both iOS and Android platforms. They have recently launched a MacOS version as well, which can be used for reviewing and organizing notes taken on the iOS version.

    Overview[edit]

In Noteshelf, users can take handwritten notes, import images, and documents and record audio. Users can also create custom diaries, provided within the app, for any period of time and duration. Users can also import PDFs with hyperlinks such as Diaries and Journals meant for personal or professional use. They can also convert their handwritten notes into text or type into a text box with various typefaces and font styles. The lasso tool allows users to select, cut, copy, delete and resize a selected portion of their notes. They can also change the color of the selected notes and sketches.

There are multiple pen tools available with various nib sizes and styles. Noteshelf is well known for its unique Ball-pen and the fountain pen due to its closer to reality texture and fluency of writing. Noteshelf is also the only note-taking app that features the ‘pencil’ tool, a feature that was only seen on Apple’s Notes app before this. Users can also save their favorite pens with the selected nib size and color to the favorites bar. They can also add multiple colors to the color palette and choose from the same palette when using the lasso tool to change color.

Users can download from a selection of covers for their notebooks and various page templates. These include Basic, White, Dark, and Midnight papers, in both portrait and landscape and different formats like ruled, grids, and dotted.

One of the notable features is the “Inspirations” section where the app features content created by other users and creators from all over the world. These are available for download for free to all users who sign up with the app’s membership service ‘Noteshelf Club’.

    Key features[edit]

    Handwriting recognition on Noteshelf

Noteshelf classic, launched in 2010[1], was one of the first iOS note-taking apps. After a series of awards and achievements, the company decided to make some changes in the app which proved to be a revolutionary development in both the sales and user base. The target audience is mainly high-school and college students, but it also appeals to teachers, business professionals, and other demographics. The main use-case of the app being handwritten note-taking, Noteshelf also provides basic drawing tools like a pencil with pressure sensitivity, an automatic shapes converter, and a customizable color palette. The app also has a choice for highlighters for PDF annotation and a text box tool with a choice of various fonts and styles. Users can also import images into the notebook and can edit them further with resize, rotate, crop, erase and lasso cut functions. Few significant features of the app include “handwriting to text conversion” and “handwriting recognition”. The former allows users to select a portion text with the lasso tool and convert it to text with any font and style. It automatically creates a text box with all the text customization options. The latter allows users to search for handwritten content anywhere in the notebook. This is available for multiple languages. Another notable feature is Audio Recording, where users can record live lectures or meetings while taking notes in the app. They can also record audio on their Apple Watch and insert it to their notes and PDFs. Noteshelf 2 isn’t just a pretty face, though. It’s a truly versatile app that is capable of managing a complex series of notes while allowing users to easily share them and modify their work with a variety of visual enhancements.[2]

In recent updates, Noteshelf for iOS has introduced features like 6x zoom, multiple picture import, and locking images on a page. Though the Android app came with only the core features of the iOS version, it also has a unique feature, which allows the users to “lock” the page after zooming in or out.

Fluid Touch is a Singapore based software development company, founded by director Rama Krishna and has its development centre with a team of 15-20 members in Hyderabad, India. They have developed several apps including a quick note-taking app called Whink and a diary app called Daily Notes.

Noteshelf Classic was launched in 2010. After ranking as the #1 app across all categories on the AppStore, with a number of achievements and accolades, and lots of positive feedback from users all over the world, the company wanted to expand the feature list on the app. Due to technical limitations, the Noteshelf classic was replaced by its successor Noteshelf 2, which was launched as a renewed app with a vast range of features in 2017.

The iOS version of the app is available for all iOS and iPad OS devices supporting iOS v11 and up. MacOS Catalina and up users can also buy Noteshelf for their Macbooks with most of the features available in the iOS version.

The Android version of the app launched in early 2019, initially for Chromebooks and Huawei tablets, and came with a set of core features of the iOS app. By mid-2019, the app was optimized for all major Android devices including mobile phones. As of now, the Noteshelf Android app is the no. 1 paid app in the Korean Play Store and amongst the top 5 apps in the US and UK.

    File Format[edit]

Users can export the notebooks or selected pages in the native notebook format ‘.noteshelf’(iOS) or ‘.nsa’(Android). Additionally, they can also export the notes as PNGs or PDFs. iCloud supports auto-backup for all the notebooks in the native format along with self-enabled backup for DropBox, OneDrive, and Google Drive[3]. On the Android side, at present, users can only upload their files on backup services like DropBox or Google drive. There is no multi-device sync between devices or between iOS and Android platforms.
