The Nottingham Mavericks are a British university ice hockey club based in Nottingham, England. They compete in the British Universities Ice Hockey Association (BUIHA) as a member of the Northern conference. The Mavericks play their home games at the National Ice Centre in Nottingham, alongside the semi professional Nottingham Lions and Professional Nottingham Panthers of the Elite Ice Hockey League.
The club was founded in 2001 by a group of students and staff members from the University of Nottingham and Nottingham Trent University, in response to a growing interest for the need to provide students in Nottingham with a ice hockey club, whereby students could compete while completing their academic studies. In 2003, the Mavericks worked together with other university ice hockey clubs from Oxford, Newcastle and London to create the BUIHA and formalised a cup competition format which would run throughout the academic calendar.
Since the clubs inception, the Mavericks have grown in size and now consist of five teams which play across various levels within the BUIHA. The club has won nine national championships (three Tier one titles, one Tier two title, three Tier three titles and two Tier 4 titles), five divisional titles (three division one titles, one division two title and one division three title) and eleven conference titles (seven northern conference titles, three southern conference titles and one central conference title).
During their history, the Nottingham Mavericks have shared a number of rivalries with other teams across the league. Currently, the Mavericks have a fierce rivalry with the Sheffield Bears. The two sides have played over 100 games since 2001.
