Nour Al Hassan
Nour Al Hassan (Arabic: نور الحسن) is a Jordanian entrepreneur,[1] founder and CEO of Tarjama, the largest linguistics service provider in the Middle East,[2] and founder and chairwoman of Ureed.com freelance platform.[3][4][5][6]
Career[edit]
Nour founded Tarjama in 2008 in Amman, Jordan[5] with the goal of addressing the gap in the region's translation and localization services through employing technology and artificial intelligence (AI).[7]
Launch of Tarjama[edit]
Nour’s career kicked off as a consultant in a multinational organization, and she noticed the gap in Arabic content and that translation in 2008 was not as advanced as it is today, which created a bottleneck in the progress of consulting workflows. That was when she decided to build a company that offers linguistic services in Jordan - and the MENA region as a whole.[8]
After a few years, Nour decided to expand through pitching to investors although her team was still small. She expanded the language base and employed advanced technologies and artificial intelligence.[8]
Education[edit]
Nour has a Bachelor's of Laws, completed in 2001, from Al Ahliyya Amman University.[9]
Support for Women[edit]
Nour is an advocate for women’s empowerment.[9] Her company Tarjama was described as a move towards a more "female economy."[2] She focuses on hiring talented, well-educated bilingual women.[2]
At least 55% of freelancers on her Ureed.com platform are women, and the freelancing website has allowed more mothers to join the workforce without having to commute to work or commit to a fixed 9 to 5 shift.[8][10][11]
Nour hired 60 women in Jordan in 2017, when a mere 17% of the country’s workforce was female.[12][11]
Nour’s two companies also trained over 200 women in translation.[9]
Owing to the two companies' reputation, women now approach Tarjama and Ureed in search for good opportunities.[2]
Recognition and Awards[edit]
Nour was named Aspen Institute Fellow in 2016.[13]
She received in 2018 Jordan’s EY Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year Award.[14]
In 2022, Forbes listed her among the year’s 20 Women Behind Middle Eastern Tech Brands.[15]
EY Jordan Entrepreneur of the Year[edit]
In a ceremony on 27 November 2018, Nour was named Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year at EY’s Entrepreneur of the Year award ceremony, which celebrates those leading growing and dynamic businesses in over 145 cities and 60 countries.[16]
