Nuala McAllister is a Northern Ireland politician who served as the Lord Mayor of Belfast in 2017–2018. She describes herself as "the first young mother to be sworn in as Lord Mayor of Belfast". [1]
Early life
McAllister was raised in a working-class, nationalist home in North Belfast. Having studied politics as an A-level at Dominican College, she proceeded to study politics and law at the University of Ulster. While at university, she participated in the Washington-Ireland Programme. Following her graduation in 2011, she secured a job with the Alliance Party.[2]
Political career
She was first elected to Belfast City Council in May 2014 to serve as an Alliance councillor for the Castle district electoral area. She contested the 2016 and 2017 Assembly elections in North Belfast, finishing as the runner-up on both occasions.
On 1 June 2017, McAllister was appointed Lord Mayor of Belfast. She announced the theme of her Mayorship as 'Global Belfast', stating, “My aim is to promote Belfast as an open, inclusive and welcoming place to live and do business." McAllister garnered controversy for being outspoken in support of liberalising Northern Ireland's abortion laws and campaigning for marriage equality during her term as Lord Mayor.[3]
In the 2019 local election, she topped the poll in Castle and was re-elected with 1,787 (15.8%) first-preference votes.[4]
