Jackson Leech (born 4 November, 1991), known professionally as Nurko, is an American electronic dance music producer, musician, and DJ.[1]

Leech has worked on numerous notable remixes, such as on fellow producer Illenium's remix album of his third studio album, Ascend, remixing "Take You Down".[2] The two later collaborated on "Sideways" released in 2021 featuring Valerie Broussard, which debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic songs chart.[3] Additionally, Leech remixed "American Spirit" by American duo Meg & Dia in June 2020, the latter of which he had previously worked with in his track "Faith" released on 4 March 2020. He then went on to remix "Need Your Love" by EDM artists Seven Lions and Gryffin.[4]

In December 2020, Nurko was highlighted as one of a few 'Artists to Watch in 2021' suggested by Dancing Astronaut following a very positive 2020.[5][6]

On August 7 2022, Nurko announced that he had signed to the record label Astralwerks, with his first single released on the label 'Eternity' with Dayce Williams released on August 19.[7]

Personal life[edit]

Leech was born on 4 November 1991 in New Jersey, United States.

Growing up in a musical household, Leech learned how to play the drums and later the piano.[8][9]

Leech went to a Shpongle show in New York when he was a senior in High School, and this motivated him to learn to produce music.[8]

His musical influences 'include Franz Schubert, Amon Tobin, Philip Glass, Skrillex, Porter Robinson and Seven Lions'.[10]

Career[edit]

The name 'Nurko' originates from Leech's hometown in New Jersey, as a street called Nurko Road.[11]

2015–2018: Early career and remixes[edit]

Nurko released his first single, "Goodbye", in May 2015 on Chill Nation, a channel part of the Trap Nation group.[12] His first remix, "Back to You" by WILD, was released in 2016 on MrSuicideSheep's second channel, SuicideSheeep, and currently has over 1 million views. He continued to release both remixes and originals between 2016 and 2018, including the two of three collaborations with singer Misdom and a collaboration with EDM duo Last Heroes on 'Promise Me' featuring Jessie Chambers released on NoCopyrightSounds in July 2018.[13]

In October 2018, Nurko released his breakout remix of Halsey's "Without Me" with another EDM artist Miles Away which as of February 2022 has over 40 million views on YouTube.[14] Leech then went on to work with Miles Away for two more remixes, Zara Larsson's 'Ruin My Life' and another Halsey track, "Nightmare", which was released in 2019.[15][16]

2019–2021: Collaborations, charts debut, notable remixes and tours[edit]

Nurko released his first track on his current label Proximity in January 2019 with his song "Breathe Without" featuring Luma, with his next on the label being "If It Isn't You" with Brayden Kehler released later that year.

2020 saw lots of new music from Nurko, with seven remixes, including a remix of Seven Lion's "Senseless" featuring Tyler Graves in July, and six original tracks including collaborations with British singer RØRY on "Better Off Lonely" and Dia Frampton on "Faith".[17]

With the release of Dabin's second album, Wild Youth, Nurko joined his tour 'Into The Wild' as support, however this was postponed in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.[18] The tour was later rescheduled for 2021.[19]

During an Insomniac livestream performed in February 2021, Nurko revealed his collaborations with fellow producer Illenium and Canadian EDM producer Dabin.[20]

Nurko then featured on Illenium's fourth album, Fallen Embers, with their collaboration "Sideways" featuring Valerie Broussard. The single was released on 7 May 2021, and debuted at number 10 on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic songs chart. It also placed 33rd on the year-end Hot Dance/Electronic songs chart.[3][21] Furthermore, he also featured on Dabin's third album, Between Broken, with their single 'When This Is Over' featuring Canadian singer Donovan Woods.[22]

In August 2021, a collaboration between Canadian EDM duo Adventure Club and Leech was released called "Colorblind", with vocals from Dayseeker. The single would go on to feature on Adventure Club's sophomore album, Love//Chaos.[23]

In November 2021, Nurko released his collaboration with William Black titled "Worth It" which also appeared on Black's album, Pieces.[24] Following this, Nurko announced his first single of his debut EP, 'Disappearing Now' featuring singer Chandler Leighton.[25]

On 3 December 2021, Nurko played at Illenium's debut festival, Ember Shores.[26][27]

Leech ended 2021 off with an EDM cover of Leonard Cohen’s 1984 song “Hallelujah” with singer Devon Baldwin on Insomniac's Lost In Dreams label.[28][29]

2022–present: Arrival EP and Astralwerks[edit]

Nurko announced the title of his debut EP, Arrival, in January 2022, with a US Tour with the same name also revealed with locations such as the Webster Hall.[30]

In January 2022, Nurko was announced to be playing at the 2022 Ubbi Dubbi festival in April alongside other names such as Diplo and Excision.[31]

Nurko was also announced to be supporting German EDM artist Virtual Riot on his Simulation Album tour at the Hollywood Palladium in April 2022.[32]

On 4 February 2022, Nurko released his second single of his EP "Lost Without You" with fellow EDM producer duo Crystal Skies and KnownAsNat providing the vocals for the track.[33]

Nurko released his third single from the Arrival EP, titled "Spinnin' Wheels" featuring American singer JT Roach on 3 March 2022.[34] Following this, he announced the release of the EP's 4th and final single, 'Breathing Again' with singer Skye Silansky, which released on 24 March with the full EP.[35][36]

On 17 May, Leech released his collaboration with ARMNHMR and Micah Martin called "Won't Make A Sound", which was originally teased two years prior in a livestream by ARMNHMR.[37] The track was released on Monstercat and features in the game Rocket League.

On 3 June, Nurko released his first remix in almost two years with his remix of 'Bittersweet Melody' by Said The Sky, which then featured on the Sentiment Remixes album.[38]

Nurko was announced to be playing at Illenium's Ember Shores festival for the second year on June 14.[39]

On 7 August, Nurko announced that he had joined the Astralwerks label on Twitter, with his first single on the label being a collaboration with singer Dayce Williams titled 'Eternity' released on 19 August.[40]
