O Mariam (Arabic:يا مريم )An Iraqi novel by Sinan Anton, published in 2012 by Dar al-Jamal, was shortlisted for the 2013 Arab Poker Prize. In his third novel, Iraqi novelist and poet Sinan Antoine addresses the thorny questions faced by minorities in today's Iraq, telling us through Yusuf's biography. (who refuses to emigrate and leave the house he built) - as in Maha's biography - (who found herself migrating inside her country and waiting for her papers to leave Iraq once and for all) - Some of the suffering of the Iraqi people, and the questions it raises about the past and the present, is, what.[1]

Story[edit]

Two contradictory visions of two persons from an Iraqi Christian family gathered under the country's conditions under one roof in Baghdad. Yousef, a lonely man in the autumn, refuses to leave the house he built, and lived in it for half a century, to migrate. He remains committed to the threads of hope and the memories of a happy past alive in his memory. Maha, a young woman who ravaged sectarian violence with her life, displaced her family and dispersed them to live as a refugee in her country, and an inmate in Beit Yusuf. She waits with her husband for an immigration date from a homeland she doesn't feel like. The novel takes place on one day, when narratives of individual and collective memory intersect with reality and hope clashes with destiny when the event changes the lives of the two characters forever. The novel raises bold and difficult questions about the situation of minorities in Iraq, with one of its characters looking for past, while the other is trying to escape Iraq now.[2]

Quotes from the novel[edit]

"The past may have been like the garden of the house I love and take care of as if she were my daughter. I run away from the noise and horror of the world. It's my paradise in the heart of hell or the Autonomous Region as I sometimes call it. I will defend her because she and the house are the last ones I have left "

"We will leave the country for them to burn and represent the dead and they will shed tears at it in hindsight."

"And he kept crying at his ruins and that golden opportunity that lost him and lost his dreams until he himself became a hero."

"All I want is to live in a place where I'm like others. I walk out and go in and I am not referred to or reminded that I am different "[3]
