Date
Duration2021-2023
LocationNorth Atlantic Ocean, near the wreck of the Titanic

The OceanGate Titanic Expedition was a chartered adventure tourism expedition to the wreck of RMS Titanic in the North Atlantic. It is operated by OceanGate, Inc. through OceanGate Expeditions, aboard a submarine tender and oceanographic mothership to the ocean above the wrecksite, and the 5-occupant deep submergence vehicle submarine OceanGate Titan to the wreck itself, some 4 km (2.5 mi) below the surface.[1] Trip tickets on the expeditions are some $250,000 USD as a mission support fee, and passengers are counted as mission specialists.[2][3]

Expeditions[edit]

2021[edit]

OceanGate launched an expedition to the Titanic in 2021. At least one of the dive missions did not succeed, as the crew was stuck on the ocean floor after the ballast released system did not release, and they waited for it to emergency release and return to the surface, ending the mission. This mission lasted some 20 hours, with 5 hours stuck on the seafloor.[2] 20-some dives were conducted during the expedition.[4]

2022[edit]

OceanGate claimed in court filings that 28 persons visited the Titanic in 2022. [5][6]

OceanGate launched an expedition to the Titanic in 2022. One of the dive missions lasted some 20 hours, and was successful in reaching the Titanic.[2] Another dive mission was not successful, as the Titan lost communications with the surface ship, and could not find Titanic. Journalist David Pogue was onboard for this mission.[7]

June 2023[edit]

Expedition journey

In June 2023, OceanGate launched the third Titanic Expedition. Communications were lost with the DSV.[8]

Accidents and incidents[edit]

June 2023[edit]

In June 2023, communications were lost by the surface tender Polar Prince with the submersible Titan, prompting a search-and-rescue operation by the Canadian Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard, and private rescue services contracted by OceanGate.[9][1]
