Onica (Also known as K-Micro Inc.) is an IT consulting company and a subsidiary of Rackspace. They are a premier consulting partner in the Amazon Web Services Partner Network. Onica helps build new revenue streams, increase efficiency and solve transformative cloud projects.[3] The company is based and headquartered in Santa Monica, California. It was founded by Stephen Garden and Ahmad in 2014. The company is backed by investment fund, Sunstone Partners. The company was formed through IT solutions company, CorpInfo. They brought on Stephen Garden as CEO due to his past working position at CorpInfo.[4]

History[edit]

Onica was founded by Stephen Garden and Ahmad Gramian in 2014. Garden was partner at technology firm, CorpInfo. Gramain was a supporter of The UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. Gramain was presumed dead in 2018.[6][7]

Corporate Round of Funding[edit]

On October 31, 2017, Onica announced a $20 million growth equity investment from private equity firm, Sunstone Partners. “There is no bigger transformation in IT today than the shift within the enterprise from private data centers to the use of public cloud infrastructure,” said Mike Biggee, Co-Founder and Managing Director at Sunstone Partners. “We are excited to partner with the Onica team to help guide customers through this massive change. Onica has built deep intellectual property and know-how around automating the migration and management of complex workloads in the cloud, enabling enterprise customers to achieve new levels of operational value and productivity while reducing IT infrastructure costs.”[8]

Sturdy Networks and NetBrains Acquisition[edit]

On December 12, 2017, Onica acquired Sturdy Networks and NetBrains. “We have long held Sturdy and NetBrains in high regard due to their forward-thinking technical strength,” said Stephen Garden, CEO of Onica, which recently spun out of CorpInfo with a $20 million growth equity investment. “Coming together with Sturdy and NetBrains allows us to support customers with a broader set of capabilities, fully capitalizing on AWS innovation to transform their businesses using the cloud.”[9]

TriNimbus Technologies Inc. Acquistion[edit]

On August 27th, 2018, Onica announced that they would acquire TriNimbus Technologies Inc., a DevOps specialist and Canada's first Premier Consulting Partner in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Partner Network (APN).[10]

Rackspace Acquisition[edit]

On November 5, 2019, Rackspace announced that they would purchase Onica for $323.4 million.[11] Rackspace's CEO, Kevin M. Jones, issued a statement talking about why Rackspace wanted to purchase Onica, “As a cloud pioneer, Onica has established itself as one of the largest pure-play AWS consultancies, with an unmatched reputation for true capability leadership with AWS and customers,” Jones said. “This acquisition will strengthen our ability to meet all of our customer needs on AWS, and together, we will have the most complete set of professional services and managed service capabilities in the industry.”[12] The deal was completed on December 3, 2019.[13] Rackspace decided that Onica will operate as a separate business unit in Rackspace's Americas sales organization.[14]

IoTanium by Onica[edit]

Onica announced the launch of IoTanium, an Internet of Things (IoT) solution that is powered by Amazon Web Services, Inc. IoTanium is designed to facilitate the rapid development and deployment of IoT applications. The solution was built on the categories of services, IoTanium Reference Hardware, IoTanium Platform and IoTanium Analytics. IoTanium Reference Hardware includes pre-integrated power and battery management, bootstrapping, provisioning, firmware updates, and connectivity via LTE and Wi-Fi. IoTanium Platform is built entirely on AWS and pulls together 11 different AWS services including AWS IoT Core, AWS Greengrass, Amazon DynamoDB, AWS Lambda, and Amazon Kinesis. The platform was built to manage data ingestion, storage and analytics, and uses entirely serverless offerings from AWS. IoTanium Analytics leverages AWS IoT Analytics, Amazon Elastic MapReduce (Amazon EMR), Amazon SageMaker, and Onica’s Data Science Workbench to bring analytics and machine learning to IoT data.[15]

Executive leadership[edit]

Onica's former executive leadership team includes Stephen Garden (Former CEO, current SVP of Rackspace[26]), Tolga Tarhan (Former CTO, current CTO of Rackspace[27]), Giridhar Premsingh (Former CFO, current CFO of DoiT International[28]).[29]

Stephen Garden[edit]

Stephen Garden is the former Chief Executive Officer of Onica. Prior to Onica, he was a partner at IT solutions company, CorpInfo. After CorpInfo decided to launch Onica, they brought on Stephen as CEO. Garden has held past positions at Verizon and Fujitsu. He is the current Senior Vice President of Rackspace. Garden has degrees from London Business School, UC Berkley and University of Brighton.[26]

Giridhar Premsingh[edit]

Giridhar Premsingh is the former Chief Financial Officer of Onica. Prior to Onica, he was the CFO of Hitachi acquired cloud computing firm, REAN Cloud. Premsingh joined the company in 2018 and left in 2020 after the Rackspace Acquisition. He is now the current Global Chief Financial Officer of DoIT International. Premsingh has degrees from CFA Institute, The Institute of Company Secretaries of India, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India.[28]

Tolga Tarhan[edit]

Tolga Tarhan is the former Chief Technology Officer of Onica. Prior to Onica, he was the CEO of Sturdy Networks LLC, an Onica company. Tarhan joined the company in 2017 and left in 2020 after the Rackspace Acquisition. He is the current Chief Technology Officer of Rackspace. Garden has degrees from Pepperdine University.[27]

Sturdy Networks LLC and NetBrains Inc.[edit]

On December 12th, 2017, Onica announced that they would acquire Sturdy and NetBrains for an undisclosed sum in a joint-acquisition. NetBrains was founded in 2009 with a focus on developing product-based software. When Sturdy Networks was acquired by Onica, executive team at Sturdy joined Onica which each of them taking on senior roles in the company. Sturdy Networks CEO, Tolga Tarhan, joined Onica as Chief Technology Officer until 2020.[36]

TriNimbus Technologies Inc.[edit]

On August 27th, 2018, Onica announced that they would acquire Vancouver based DevOps specialist, TriNimbus Technologies Inc., for an undisclosed sum. Onica CEO, Stephen Garden, offered his perspective on the acquisition, “This is a defining moment for Onica. The acquisition of TriNimbus demonstrates an ongoing commitment to our relationship with AWS and confidence in its competitive position. The fit with TriNimbus is natural as both companies are aligned in so many ways.
