Osler House Boat Club is a rowing club is for medical students and is open to students and Fellows involved in research in a range of topics related to human health and welfare at the University of Oxford..[1] It is based on the Isis at Boathouse Island, Christ Church Meadow, Oxford, Oxford.[2]
It is one of the 36 "College" boat clubs of Oxford University. Whilst all of the other college clubs represent one or more college or permanent private hall, Osler House is unique in being open purely to members of the university's clinical medical school.[3]. It is named after Osler House - the clinical medics club (Similar to a college JCR or MCR)
History[edit]
Osler House Boat Club was founded in 1839 and the club colours are black and white.[4] The club shares the facilities belonging to Brasenose College Boat Club. was founded in 1839, racing independently as a clinical medics club, before merging with Green College after its foundation in 1979. Green College was set up as a college for graduate medical students and students in related areas, and had 50% of its students involved in the medical field (clinical or academic) before its merger with Templeton College to form Green Templeton College, in 2008 [5].
In 2008, the newly formed Green Templeton college formed its own boat club [6], leaving Osler House once again competing as an independent entity. Osler House still maintains the BR boat code "OSG" as a nod to its history [7]
This independent club continued being active in collegiate racing until 2012 [8]. Since then it has been largely dormant, bar entering one event each year to maintain affiliation to OURCs.
Current[edit]
As of 2020, Osler House Boat Club was being revived. The club had c. 40 members, 1 Women's boat, and 2 very old Men's boats. The equipment was stored in Brasenose College Boat House. Green Templeton College retained strong ties with the clinical medicine community through its affiliation with Osler House.[9]
