Ousepachan Vaalakuzhy also known as Joseph Valakuzhy is an Indian film producer and distributor who is well known for his contribution to Malayalam Movies.[1] Ousepachan Vaalakuzhy was born on 15th January 1958 in Alappuzha district of Kerala as the youngest child of O.Eapen Valakuzhy, Founder of Seasia Midland Bank [2] and Rosamma Eapen. Ousepachan's mother Rosamma Eapen belongs to Maliyil, Edathua. Ousepachan did his schooling at Leo XIII High School, Alappuzha and graduated in Zoology from Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram. Later he did his articles in Chartered Accountancy in Alappuzha. When Ousepachan was nine years old (1967), He acted in a school play titled Nee Velichamaanu (You are light) where he played the role of a young woman named Ponnamma. His performance was well received and he played the role of a girl again in a stage play the next year named Sabarmathi Dooreyaanu (Sabarmathi is Far).

Ousepachan Vaalakuzhy resides with his family in Palarivattom. Ousepachan is married to Mini Ousepachan, on 4 June 1989 during the shoot of Ramjirao Speaking. Mini is a diamond jewelry designer who is the owner of Maria D Designs a diamond and antique jewelry firm. The couple has three children - Eapen Joseph Valakuzhy, Mathew Joseph alias Mathew Ousepachan and Thomas Joseph.

Career[edit]

Ousepachan started his cinematic career as an assistant director in the year 1983, for the movie Eettillam, directed by Fazil[3]. In 1984 he jointly produced Mohan Lal starrer Nokketha Dhoorathu Kannum Nattu with Fazil for which the latter wielded the megaphone[4]. Nadhiya (Nadia Moidu) made her debut in Malayalam with this movie. After running successfully for more than 200 days in Kerala, this film was remade in Tamil Poove Poochudava in 1985. Nokketha Dhoorathu Kannum Nattu was selected in Indian Panorama and won the year’s State Award for ‘Aesthetic Quality and Popular Appeal’

In 1988 Ousepachan teamed once again with Fazil to produce Kakkothikavilae Appoppan Thadikal. The film starred Revathi and Ambika in the lead role and introduced actress Kaveri, and was directed by Kamal, this was his second film. Kaveri gained popularity in Malayalam, Tamil, and Telugu after this movie.[5] The very same year Ousepachan and Fazil produced their first Tamil movie Varusham Padhinaru. The film was a blockbuster and was the launch vehicle for Kushboo who went on to reign the Tamil film industry during the 80s and 90s.

The Osuepachan-Fazil producer duo made Ramjirao Speaking in 1989[5].The movie marked the directorial debut of Siddique Lal who went on to become a trendsetter in Malayalam film industry.[6] Later this movie was remade in Hindi as Hera Pheri by Priyadarshan[7]. Over the years it has become a cult classic. It was voted as the best Bollywood comedy film of all time in an online poll conducted by The Indian Express[8]. Paresh Rawal won the best comedian award in Filmfare, IIFA and Star Screen Awards.The same movie was remade in Tamil as Arangetra Velai by Fazil. Later Siddique became a famous director in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, he directed Salman Khan's Body Guard. Lal later changed to becoming an actor/director/studio owner. Sai Kumar and Rekha debuted through this film.

He went on to produce Ee Kanni Koodi in 1990 which was directed by KG George[9][10]. This was the second movie of Rajan P Dev where he got a full-length role.In 1991 Ousepachan produced Swadhwanam. This movie was special in many ways as it marked the debut of actress Meena in Malayalam Film Industry, starred hero Suresh Gopi and was directed by Siby Malayil, Ousepachan’s schoolmate. through this movie, Bharathi Vishnuvardhan made her Malayalam debut with this film.

Ousepachan introduced Sukanya to Malayalam film industry with his next film Sagaram Sakshi (1994) starring Mammootty, directed by Siby Malayil [11]. In 1996 he co-produced Hitler with Lal, with Mammootty in the lead role and Siddique in the director’s chair.[12] Ousepachan’s next film was 1998’s Ormacheppu and introduced Lal as the hero and Dileep was co-actor in this movie[13]. This movie was written & directed by Lohithadas (it was his second movie). He went on to produce Karunyam, a family drama starring Jayaram, Murali and Divya Unni in the year 1997. The film tasted success but was critically acclaimed and is considered as one of the best films written & directed by Lohithadas.

Life is beautiful, a 2000 release and a Mohan Lal starrer, was a family drama written & directed by Fazil. In this movie, Ousepachan was producer Partner and he released the movie all over Kerala. In this movie Geetu Mohandas was introduced. From the year 2000 to 2005, Ousepachan was active as a film distributor and distributed many films including Passion of Christ (Mel Gibson movie) and Friends. In Friends movie he was a co-producer, The film was highest grossing Malayalam movie of 1999. It was later remade into Tamil with the same name (2001) and into Telugu as Snehamante Idera (2001) and Odia as Dosti. In the year 2006, he produced and released Jayasurya starrer Kerala House Udan Vilpanakku, a comedy-drama directed by Thaha.

After decade-long hiatus, Ousepachan returned to production under his own production banner 'Ousepachan Movie House' with the 2016 release King Liar[14] [15]The film also marked the return of writer-director duo Siddique-Lal after 22 years.The next film from Ousepachan Movie House is Oru Adaar love, directed by Omar Lulu and is slated for release in 2018.[16][17] [18][19]
