Pablo Ramón Sanchez (born August 18), nicknamed the "Secret Weapon", is a character in the Humongous Entertainment-created Backyard Sports franchise. He is depicted as a short boy with a baseball cap and a shirt that exposes his belly button who almost always talks in Spanish. The character has received acclaim for his overall skill in sports, which has made him a fan favorite in the franchise.
Creation
The character of Pablo was inspired by The Bad News Bears character Miguel Aguilar, a Latino boy whose short height caused him to be overlooked.[2] Pablo was created as a similar short Spanish-speaking boy who players might initially overlook because of his weak appearance but gradually discover his talents as they played more of the game.[3]
Due to the developers failing to find a Latino voice actor for Pablo, a hidden line of dialogue was added in the first game, Backyard Baseball, where Pablo states that he learned to speak Spanish in school.[3]
Reception
Pablo Sanchez is widely considered one of the greatest fictional sports players of all time.[2][3][4]
