The Pakistan Cave Research & Caving Federation (PCRCF), was formed on 14 August 1997. It is a non-profit national constituent governing body overseeing underground exploration, research, and the conservation of caves in Pakistan and adjacent areas.
The PCRCF works closely with its member associations to support cave and karst research by encouraging original exploration, organizing cave rescue conferences and expeditions, and supporting educational, scientific, and recreational caving. The PCRCF is a member of the International Union of Speleology (UIS),[1][2] through its founder and President Hayatullah Khan Durrani, Chairman Malik Abdul Rahim Baabai and media officer Mohammad Abubakar Durrani.
History[edit]
In 1990, a group of Chiltan Adventurers accepted a bet to enter the Kach Mountains in Balochistan. They explored a small cave in the middle of vertical rock with the intent to further develop cave mapping and cave exploration as a sport. The idea of an official Pakistani Cave Research & Caving Federation was discussed with an Orpheus Caving Club official and a representative of the British Cave Research Association, Simon James Brooks, during his visits to Pakistan in 1991, 1992, and 1994, at the invitation of the Chiltan Adventures Association. The PCRCF was the first cave exploration organization in Pakistan. The headquarters of the PCRCF are based in Quetta.[3]
As caving is a vast field, it was decided by some to establish a separate Federation for caves and caving associated phenomena in Pakistan and adjacent areas. On 14 August 1997, some officials and members of the Chiltan Adventurers Association Balochistan announced the formation of the Pakistan Cave Research & Caving Federation.
International Speleological Participation[edit]
Pakistan's National Speleo and caving team, selected by the Pakistan Cave Research and Caving Federation jointly with the Chiltan Adventurers Association of Balochistan, and headed by Pakistani caver Hayatullah Khan Durrani, participated in the International Speleo / Caving Congress 2014, 2016, Iran. The National Speleological and Caving Team of Pakistan, headed by Hayatullah Khan Durrani (President PCRCF) as team leader, participated in the 5th European Speleo Caving Conference (Eurospeleo Conference 2016) in Yorkshire, and the 10th PAK-Britain Friendship Caving and Speleo Expedition 13 to 31 August 2016 under the patronage of the British Caving Association (BCA) and Orpheus Caving Club, Derbyshire United Kingdom.
The President of the PCRCF also attended the Bureau meeting of the International Union of Speleology, which was also held in Yorkshire. In July 2019, Hayatullah Khan Durrani had a short visit to the UK, meeting with Simon James Brooks to finalize the participation of Pakistan Caving officials and members in the Hidden Earth conference in Great Britain.
