Paolo Petrocelli is an Italian Cultural Manager and Academic[1]. He is the Founder and President of EMMA for Peace, a non-profit organization that promotes intercultural dialogue and peace through music.[2]

Petrocelli is currently the Head of Dubai Opera, a multi-format, performing arts center located within The Opera District in Downtown Dubai.[1]

Paolo Petrocelli holds several university degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Middlesex University, London, a Bachelor of Arts in Literature, Music and Entertainment from La Sapienza University, Rome, a Master of Arts in Violin Performance from the Conservatory of Santa Cecilia, Rome, an Executive MBA from the SDA Bocconi School of Management, Milan, and a PhD in Cultural Economics, Marketing and Creativity from the IULM University, Milan.[3]

As an academic, Petrocelli’s research interests lie in Musicology; in particular, twentieth-century British music, and this interest is reflected in his academic writings and publications.

Paolo Petrocelli has worked a number of positions in music and management, including the following:

Before settling as a Cultural Manager, Paolo Petrocelli performed on several worldwide stages as a violinist for twenty years.[4] Moreover, he was a founding member of the band Vinegar Socks, an indie-folk band that was formed in Rome in 2009.[5]

Petrocelli was a Visiting Fellow at the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library at Yale University in 2011.[6]

In 2013, Petrocelli founded EMMA for Peace, or Euro Mediterranean Music Academy, a non-profit organization that promotes intercultural dialogue and peace through music. It was officially launched at the 13th World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Warsaw, Poland. The organization hosts concerts, workshops, and other events that bring together musicians from different cultures and backgrounds.[7]

He is the Co-Founder and Honorary President of the Italian Youth Association for UNESCO.[8]

As of 2016, Petrocelli serves as the Cultural and Music Diplomacy Officer for the Permanent Secretariat of the World Summit of Nobel Peace Laureates.[9]

He was nominated to be a part of the Board of Directors of the Rome Opera House in 2014.  

In 2015, Petrocelli was appointed as the President of the Youth Committee of the Italian National Commission for UNESCO.[9] He chaired this role until 2019.  

He was a Visiting Researcher at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab in 2016.[3] He regularly lectures on Management and International Cultural Relations at Bocconi University, Yale University, MIT, New York University, and Université Paris-Sorbonne[10], and other Italian and international universities.  

In 2019, he became the Cultural Advisor for the British band, Coldplay.[3]

He became a Researcher Affiliate at Harvard University in 2020, where he joined metaLAB, and worked on coordinating a research project with Jeffrey Schnapp, a project that explores the future of Performing Arts.[11]

In 2020, Petrocelli founded Music Diplomacy, a blog community dedicated to collecting the most inspiring stories on music diplomacy from all over the world.[12] In the same year, he became the Scientific Director for the Academia Costume and Moda.[13] He also founded Opera Futura in 2020, an Italian independent observatory on opera.[8]

From 2021 to 2023, he was the Director General of the Walter Stauffer Foundation, a higher education institution dedicated to string instruments.[14]

Petrocelli was appointed as Head of Dubai Opera in 2023.[1]

Opera for Peace[4][edit]

In 2019, Paolo Petrocelli co-founded Opera for Peace, along with Julia Lagahuzère and Dmitry Vdovin, and it is an international cultural nonprofit organization.  

He contributed to the launch of the Opera for Peace Academy Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in 2021. The Academy acts as a cultural and educational platform for institutions and artists coming from the Middle East and North Africa.
