Patrick McSharry[1] is a professor at Carnegie Mellon University in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He started teaching at the University of Oxford in 1995 and remains affiliated[2] with the Oxford Man Institute of Quantitative Finance and the Oxford Internet Institute. He is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

McSharry was named a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow in 2003 and held Marie Curie Fellowships in the UK (1995-1999) and Spain (2005-2007). He advises national and international government agencies, foundations, non-governmental organizations, and private sector firms on developing strategies for data analytics within the finance, insurance, agriculture, energy, telecoms, environment, education, and healthcare sectors. He develops quantitative techniques for automating decision-making and improving risk management. His research focuses on artificial intelligence[3], machine learning, data science[4], big data, forecasting[5], predictive analytics, and the analysis of human behavior.

McSharry has published[6] over 100 peer-reviewed papers and three books[7] including Big Data Revolution[8].

McSharry received a first-class honours bachelor of arts degree in theoretical physics in 1993, a master of science degree in engineering from Trinity College Dublin in 1995, and a Doctor of Philosophy (DPhil) degree in Mathematics from the University of Oxford in 2000.
