Commodore Paul Dryden-Dymond SM ED was a South African Navy officer who served as Commodore Superintendent Naval Dockyard Simon's Town.
World War 2
He joined the SATS General Botha in 1928. Member of the South African Division of the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve from 1930 to 1939. He commanded the SAS Swartberg belonging to the Seaward Defence Forces at the outbreak of the Second World War. He spent the next five years almost continuously at sea in the South Atlantic, the Indian Ocean and Mediterranean with a number of different commands.
He was sent to England to commission the first of the three frigates transferred to South African Naval Forces in 1944 – HMSAS Good Hope. After the war, he was in charge of the operation to annex Prince Edward Island on behalf of the government of South Africa. He led a squadron of frigates up the Congo River on the first ever visit by South African ships to the Belgian Congo. OC SAS Jan van Riebeeck in 1950. He was the first South African to set foot on Bouvet Island when he led an expedition there in 1955.
He was chosen to be the first South African Captain Superintendent on Simonstown Dockyard on the most significant occasion, not only for the SA Navy, but to South Africa itself, of the handover of the Dockyard from Royal Navy control in 1957. The first ever South African Naval Attaché to Portugal in 1959 to 1965. He was promoted to the rank of commodore in 1966. Commodore Superintendent Naval Dockyard Simon's Town from 1966 to 1968. He retired from the SADF in 1968.
