Pav Dharia (born 5 June 1988) is an Australian Indian singer and music composer who predominantly works in Punjabi and Indian music industry.[1] He is best known for his 2017 music single Na Ja which garnered over a million views within the first week of its release.[2] The song is in the list Top 50 most viewed Punjabi songs on Youtube and Amazon Prime Music as of May 2023.[3] Pav made his musical debut in Bollywood with the song Funk for the 2020 Hindi-language drama Taish.[4]

Early life[edit]

Pav Dharia was born as Pav Sandhu in Batala and is the son of Devinder Dharia, a Punjabi folk and Bhangra (music) music singer[5] from a village near Gurdaspur in Punjab, India.[6] Devinder got musical training under noted Indian folk music artist Lal Chand Yamla Jatt.[7] In 1989, Devinder moved to Australia[5] and in 1998, at the age of 10, Pav moved to Australia to join his father as well.[8][7]

Pav cites his father as a source of inspiration behind his musical interests since he was continually accustomed to the Punjabi culture through his father who was actively participating in spreading Punjabi folk music in Australia. As per Pav, the first bhangra performance at a public event in the country was his father's.[7]

Career[edit]

Pav started his career with the song Bewaffa in the year 2012. However, it wasn't until 2017 that Pav had a breakthrough in the music industry with his viral hit single Na Ja. The music video for the song featured a woman (Harjot Shergill) refusing a janitor's (Pav Dharia) proposal and her subsequent life change in later years as she discovered that the janitor (Dharia) had become a pop star.[9]

In the year 2019, Pav joined the mainstream Indian music industry. His song titled Ni Karna Viah (roughly translates to don't want to get married) was released with VYRL Originals. The video was themed around the compulsion of getting married young in the Indian subculture[10] In another interview, Pav described his willingness to explore Bollywood music as a gradual step in his career.[9]

In 2020, he entered Bollywood with the song Funk featuring Fateh. The song was featured in the 2020 Indian Hindi-language action thriller drama film Taish directed by Bejoy Nambiar.[4][11]

Influences[edit]

Pav sought inspiration from classical music singers such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Shaukat Ali and Atif Aslam. Among the new generation of music producers, he also cites musicians such as Rishi Rich and Dr Zeus as an inspiration.[9]

Personal Life[edit]

Pav shares a close friendship with musician and writer Manav Sangha and is also seen frequently interacting with international Punjabi music artists Sidhu Moose Wala, Jasmine Sandlas, The PropheC, and J-Statik.[12] Pav is also close to Indian rapper Raxstar with whom he collaborated on several occasions including two songs. [13] Pav was also rumoured to have been engaged in the year 2018 but it turned out to be a staged act for his 2019 single Ni Karna Viah.[14]

He lives in Sydney with his family.[5]
