The Philippine Normal University North Luzon (PNUNL; Filipino: Pamantasang Normal ng Pilipinas Hilagang Luzon), commonly known as PNU North Luzon, is the third regional branch of the Philippine Normal University located in the municipality of Alicia in the province of Isabela.

History[edit]

The idea of establishing a Philippine Normal College branch in Isabela was conceived as early as 1962 and led to the passage of Republic Act No. 4242[2] on July 19, 1965.

The local officials and residents of the municipality of Alicia, in coordination with the college officials in Manila, facilitated the establishment of the branch and housed it in the Home Economics Building of Alicia Central School. On July 26, 1971, the PNC Isabela branch was formally inaugurated with Thelma R. Gonzaga as officer-in-charge.

In 1972, PNC Isabela moved to its present site in Barangay Aurora. The land was donated by Rev. Cornelio Tomas of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (4 hectares) and by the Abuan family (1 hectare). The first graduation was held on March 22, 1975.

In 2012, PNU Isabela was designated as an Indigenous Peoples Education Hub [3] which called for additional courses and encouraged researches on indigenous peoples education. In 2014, the campus was renamed Philippine Normal University North Luzon.[4][5].

Academics[edit]

In 2014, the university implemented an outcomes-based teacher education curriculum that focuses on the development of the teacher as an educated person, a reflective practitioner, and a discipline-grounded responsive specialist.

Except for the Bachelor in Early Childhood Education program, all bachelor's degree programs are offered with a certificate in teaching in any of the following levels of basic education: elementary, junior secondary, and senior secondary high school.

Courses related to Indigenous Peoples Education were also added.
