PT Hartono Istana Teknologi (trading as Polytron) is an Indonesian electronics company headquartered in Kudus Regency, Central Java. The company manufactures consumer electronics products, including television, audio electronics, refrigerator, air conditioner, washing machine, and smartphones. It is owned by Indonesian conglomerate company and cigarette manufacturer Djarum.
Polytron has three factories in Kudus Regency, namely Krapyak, Sidorekso, and Sayung (at the border with Semarang),[1] with a total of more than 6,000 employees as of 2017.[2]
History
Polytron was founded by Djarum on 16 May 1975 as PT Indonesian Electronic & Engineering. The company started technology transfers from Belgium-based Philips-MBLE, supported by newly trained employees and European electronic components. In 1977, the company started producing television sets with the "Polytron" brand, but it was unsuccessful. The company then turned to Hong Kong technologies; it launched 20-inch black and white television from components imported from there. In 1979 the company started producing 22-inch and 26-inch color television.[3][4]
Between 1975 and 1980 the company underwent several company name changes, including PT Hartono Istana Electronic and its present name PT Hartono Istana Teknologi.
In 1980 Polytron started cooperation with Finland-based Salora for its television manufacturing,[4] as well as technology transfers. Polytron later started producing audio electronics in the 1980s, which made Polytron a well-known brand in the Indonesian electronics market.[5]
In 1990, PT Hartono Istana Teknologi created two brands, namely Polytron and Digitec. Polytron was marketed as a "European" brand and Digitec was marketed as a "Japanese" brand. In 1992 the company was able to export television sets to various countries in Europe such as the United Kingdom, Spain, and others (although they did not use the Polytron brand), but it later focused on the domestic market following the 1997 Asian financial crisis.[5] The Digitec brand was later dropped.
